Visitor analysis of the current site Year/p eriod Average number of unique visitors per month Average number of unique visitors per day Average number of page views per month Average page/visitor , , ,39

Interesting to know: 29,30% go to the website more than once a month Average pages/visit 2012: 4, : 4, : 3, : 3,39 Time spent on site longer dan 1 min: 2012: 11,75% 2013: 10,77% 2014: 10% 2015: 9,56%

Interesting to know: Average time spent on the site ( ): 3 min Top 5 of visiting countries ( ): Belgium, Netherlands, France, US, UK Came on the site: Directly 30,12% Search engine 21,32% Referral links 48,56%

Interesting to know: TOP 5 pages ( ) Homepage Interactive map General setting Downloads Themepage Use of the sea New visits vs returning visitor ( ) New: 70,70% Returning 29,30%

Inspiration for an updated atlas in 2011: users workshop results Portal site, communication tool => demonstrate complexity of coast Easy navigation is important Target audience: coastal actors, broad public. Not internal within government. More info about the marine environment & land-sea interface Cartography = main feature Also publish updated book! Integrate instruments: indicators, coastal wiki, coastal codex (legislation) These results were taken into account when updating the new kustatlas Vlaanderen/België online

Users Workshop results (2) Main added value of the coastal atlas: Integration of information; present key figures per sector Unique (integrated) maps Linking land and sea use the atlas to demonstrate the specificity of the Coastal zone and the land-sea interface Link atlas to coastal policies Focus on easy to use, static maps on entry; interactivity for more advanced users Portal for data & information (trends & predictive)

Core policies & data per sector

Strong focus on easy cartography: selection of ready-to-use maps

Integrating a rich set of data in the Kustatlas: sustainability indicators -21 indicators grouped in 7 chapters -Insight about state of the coast and sustainability of its development -Policy support tool for coastal managers -Indicator outputs: graphs and tables

Linkage to ICZM Kustatlas: awareness raising tool for a wide public about the complexity of the coast Coastal sustainability indicators pursue effective policies for the coast, integrated data and maps are provided Kustatlas is a tool for giving the civilian access to information of the government, its policy and its scientific organizations For coastal communities: giving the civilian access to policy information Useful information on the seaside and consideration of land-sea interface

Use of the kustatlas Scientist users: need detailed and complex information, f.e. combining many layers of the interactive map, using graphs in publications Policy and decision maker users: selected information, user-friendly avoiding technical complexity, f.e. graph on sustainability indicator employment degree in tourism Educational users: ready-to-use educational packages, f.e. package for teachers on planning an excursion to the sea, ready-to-use maps for teacher geology, for guides at the coast, Public users: easily accessible and transparent basic information, f.e. general touristic information on the coastal region

Small scale test of the kustatlas A small scale test was held amongs different target user groups: teacher, guide, touristic sector, Flemish administration, museum, student, scientist, Testing user friendliness of the site and use of the interactive part of the atlas Method: Open and closed questions Exercices on content and map answer to be found on the site itself thinking out loud CONCLUSION: Very positive and enthousiastic feedback on the interactive part of the kustatlas! Users have concrete ideas in using the interactive map for their sector.

Thank you - Flanders Marine Institute - YOU for your attention Kathy.belpaeme@west-vlaanderen.be
