1 State Geography Due: Tuesday, October 24, 2017 Step 1: You will first go online to Click on calculators and from the drop down menu, click on distance calculators. Where it says, From Location, make sure it is Berkeley, California. Where it says, To Location, click on search and type in your state s capital city, and state. Click Calculate Distance. Write down the distance in kilometers and in miles Right click on the map and save it to your files. You will need this in your report. If you cannot save it, you can always copy and paste. (Paragraph 1) Step 2: Go to countryreports.org. At the bottom of the page, click on United States Edition. Sign in using the user name: sjensen and password: room102. Select your state. (Paragraph 2) On the first page about your state, write down the Timezone: Step 3: Go online to 50 States.com and click on your state. Scroll down until you get to Government. How many counties are in your state? Scroll down until you get to Geography. Geographic Location (Continent): North America Total Area: Land Area: Water Area: Coastline: (this may not be available if your country is landlocked.) (Paragraph 3) Highest Point: (location) ; (feet) Lowest Point: (location) ; (feet) Bordering States: (Paragraph 4) Geographic Center: Location - Geographic Coordinates from the Center Topography: Click on Climate (Paragraph 5) Annual High Temperature: Annual Low Temperature: Average Temperature: Average Precipitation (rainfall): Days per year with precipitation:

2 Step 4: Go to geology.com. Click on US Maps. Click on your state. Save the images of the following four maps. Make sure to label each map. 1) County map 2) City map 3) Physical Map 4) River Map Step 5: Click on Bold; Click on this icon and click 2 to make sure you are double spaced. Step 6: Click on Align Text Right and type your last name and page number. Press return key. (Note: Make sure you type your last name and new page number on every new page.) Step 7: Click on Align Text Center. Center Right o o Type at the top, center of your page in bold Geography; Touch the return key. Step 8: Click on Align Text Left icon. Click the bold key to make sure it is OFF. Step 9: Touch the tab key to indent your paragraph; Begin typing your report. Your first paragraph will read as follows: Name of State is located on the continent of North America. The distance from Sacramento, California to Capital City, State, the capital city, is kilometers or miles. Step 10: Underneath Geography, insert the map from timeanddate.com that shows the map with arrow from Sacramento, California to your capital city. Touch the return key. Your cursor should be below the map centered; You will now label the map by typing in bold World Map. Touch the return key. Continue typing the remaining part of your research making sure to indent each paragraph as shown in the example.

3 Step 11: You will now insert the four maps you saved from geology.com. Remember to type your last name with the new page number in the right corner of your page on each new page. Once you have placed your name and page number, touch the enter key. Now make sure you are aligned in the center and are in bold. The first map you will title County Map of Your State. Below the title, insert the county map. On the next page, title it City Map of Your State. Below the title, insert the city map. On the following page, title it Physical Map of Your State. Below the title, insert the physical map. On the last page, title it River Map of Your State. Below the title, insert the river map. (Note: On the example page, I used the distance from Washington D.C. to Sacramento, California because the distance would have been too short.)

4 Jensen 2 Geography California is located on the continent of North America. The distance from Berkeley, California to Washington DC, USA, the capital city, is 3826 kilometers or 2377 miles. World Map California is in the Pacific Time zone and has a total of fifty-eight counties. The total area of California is 163,707 square miles. It is ranked number three in the union. Of this area, there is 155,973 square miles of land, 7,735 square miles of water, 840 miles of coastline, and 3,427 miles of shoreline. The highest point in California is Mt. Whitney with an elevation 14,494 feet and is ranked the 2 nd tallest mountain in the United States. The lowest point is Badwater Basin in Death Valley. It is 282 feet below sea level and it is the lowest point in the United States. California borders Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon. California s geographic center is 38 miles east of Madera. Its geographic coordinates from the center are N/ W. The topography (physical land features) of California has long mountainous

5 Jensen 3 coastline, central valley, Sierra Nevada on the east, southern desert basins, and rugged mountains in the north according to 50states.com. The climate in California is moderate for most of the state. According the usclimatedata.com, it has an annual high temperature of 73.6 F and an annual low temperature of 48.3 F with an overall average of F. The annual average precipitation (rainfall) is inches. The number of days of precipitation is unknown due to the state having drought years in addition to having El Niño and La Niña years where there are many days of rain.
