1 Iceland Field School Summer 2019

2 Hello Students! Would you like to join us on a field school to Iceland from late April to mid-june, 2019? You can earn 10 university transfer credits in six weeks, then continue travels or return home. The courses involved in this field school are 1 st - and 2 nd -year university transfer courses, which work well with many academic programs.

3 Why Iceland? Iceland is: a place with an amazing physical environment! a world leader in renewable energy a mecca for eco-tourism culturally unique, with deeply held roots in the Viking Age heavily involved in the geopolitics of a warming Arctic

4 Not From Douglas? No Worries! Simply register with Douglas College for one semester and you are eligible for the field school. Return to your regular institution next term as usual and transfer the credits.

5 Field School Theme and Courses The Iceland field school examines how the physical and human geography of this island nation provide opportunities for alternative energy and sustainable development. Students enroll together in all three University Transfer courses, and travel together with their instructors to Iceland.

6 GEOG 1120 Earth Environments: Land and Water (4 lab science credits) If you already have GEOG 1120 or an equivalent course you could instead earn credits for GEOG 2220 Geomorphology (3 credits) This lab science course examines the processes that shape Earth s surface, such as tectonics, glaciers, rivers, waves, wind, and human activity. In Iceland we ll stand in the mid- Atlantic ridge, watch glaciers calve into the ocean, and see active fumaroles, geysers and volcanic landscapes.

7 GEOG 1190 Regional Geography of the North Atlantic GEOG 1190 (3 arts credits) Geography 1190 will focus on Iceland s role within the North Atlantic region. We ll investigate its physical context, as well as historical, cultural and socio-economic aspects of this unique island state. While in Iceland we ll visit archaeological sites of the Viking Age, explore myths, stereotypes and identity as well as contemporary issues.

8 GEOG 2311 Urban Environmental Sustainability (3 arts credits and the other courses act as pre-requisites) Over half the world s population lives in cities. This course examines efforts by cities around the world to become more sustainable. It explores topics such as waste management, energy use, biodiversity, green spaces and urban design. In Iceland we will look at several of these topics on location while hearing from local experts.

9 Specific Dates Classes begin on April 29 th, 2019 at the New Westminster campus. We leave for Iceland on May 26 th, Classes finish in Iceland on June 9 th, You can return home immediately, or continue travels in Iceland, Europe or beyond.

10 Learning Excursions (See Pictures in Next Pages) We ll be based just outside Reykjavík, but we ll be travelling to various places in Iceland s south and west: Reykjanes Peninsula mid-atlantic ridge, lava formations, volcanic fumaroles, geothermal power plants to the south to glaciers, waterfalls, rock formations, volcanoes in the SW interior we ll experience turf houses and Þingvellir set in the mid-atlantic rift, it s the site of the world s earliest parliament and a place of ecological importance and more

11 We ll be based near Reykjavík with its amazing public art.

12 You ll take MANY pictures of Harpa, the concert hall and conference centre.

13 The classroom will usually be outdoors where we ll work with hands-on assignments.

14 We ll be where glaciers have calved into a lagoon and icebergs float out to sea.

15 Near the rift of the mid-atlantic ridge, we ll touch tumuli, pahoehoe, cinder cones.

16 We ll learn about Iceland s volcanism and seismicity in class, and see how this translates to the real world in the field and in the interactive Lava Centre. We get to visit the emergency control centre in Reykjavík!

17 An Icelandic expert will teach us about geothermal energy.

18 Mud Pot Water Comes Out Boiling

19 Naturally superheated water is transported across the landscape

20 to tanks where it is cooled before distribution for household heating.

21 We ll spend time in the world s most northern capital city Reykjavík.

22 We ll ask questions about the impact of tourism. Is Iceland as green as it seems?

23 We ll visit places where hordes of tourists flock and ask if development is sustainable.

24 Will the beautifully pristine places remain so as millions of people visit each year?

25 We ll be in Þingvellir in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the site of the world s oldest Parliament.

26 We ll learn how early settlers built homes adapted to their northern environment

27 and see some classic modern Icelandic building styles and materials.

28 We ll consider the sagas, myths & stereotypes, and search for meaningful identity.

29 We ll Be Based at GeoCamp Remember that dormitories are not 4-star hotels! Geocamp is clean, warm and welcoming. Small groups of people will stay in each flat within the building. Some sections will be for women, and others for men.

30 Rooms are shared. Soft down duvets in clean white covers keep you cozy.

31 Each shared area has it s own common room for eating, studying and visiting.

32 Most meals are supplied, but the kitchens are available for serious snacking.

33 And yes, bathrooms are shared in each area.

34 The teaching room can multi-task as a big common room.

35 We ll Overnight in Southern Iceland While in the south, we ll stay in uber-cute little cottages it s an Icelandic thing.

36 We ll Overnight in Southern Iceland They are tiny, clean and cozy with everything we need.

37 Your Instructors Have Field School Experience Collectively, Mike, Susan and Kathy have led field schools to Belize, China, Scotland and Wales.

38 The Costs Program cost = $3,900 for 24 students, or $4,025 if 20 enroll includes: all accommodation and transportation in Iceland, most meals, entrance fees to museums, guest speakers and guides Add: tuition for three courses (approx. $1,500 domestic) airfare: $800 -$900 estimated (but $450 currently) other costs: travel medical insurance, textbooks, passport; visa (for international students only); rain gear, hiking boots spending money - $500-$1,000? Total (rough) cost: $7,000 - $8,000, depending on how much spending money people anticipate using

39 Field Schools Give Great Value Earn 10 credits with half the summer left for work or continued travels. The credits are transferable and helpful for many types of programs. Being able to list international study experience on a resume to show future employers that you deal well with travel, inter-cultural awareness and compact learning programs is invaluable.
