1 Geography 2019 Undergraduate Course Guide
2 This is where it all begins... At Hull you get more than just in-depth classroom teaching. We place a strong focus on field trips, both in the UK and abroad, so you can apply your knowledge in the real world. All over the real world, in fact: recent field course destinations have included Spain, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Malawi and Morocco.* We re perfectly located for field work closer to home, too. East Yorkshire gives easy access to a fantastic range of field work and dissertation locations, including dynamic coastal and fluvial systems, areas of urban regeneration, rural economy and environments, and Ice Age landscapes. We specialise in major issues from globalisation and rural economies to changing climates and flood modelling. And we re internationally renowned for our research work which underpins the modules we teach. Students benefit from the relaxed and helpful attitude of our staff. We provide tutorial support throughout your degree, with individual support for your dissertation project in the final year enabling you to follow your own research interests in geography. We also offer opportunities for consultancy projects and the chance to learn about teaching geography in your final year. Our courses are also accredited by the Royal Geographical Society. * All the core costs of first and second-year field work are covered in your tuition fees. Optional third and fourth-year trips are available at cost. OVERSEAS enjoy overseas field trips to locations such as Malawi, Morocco and Italy 95% of Hull geography graduates in work or further study within six months* * Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education for the academic year 2015/16, published by HESA June 2017 #3 in the UK for the impact of our research (Research Excellence Framework 2014) 2
3 Careers Our strong emphasis on field trips, both in the UK and overseas, doesn t just provide you with one of the highlights of your degree. Whether you travel to Germany, Spain, Italy, Malawi, Hong Kong, Morocco, the Pacific Northwest, the Swiss Alps or within the UK, your field work adds real-world depth and perspective to what you learn in the classroom and lab. It s the kind of experience that employers value. You also have the opportunity to bolster your CV further by taking our study abroad programmes and spending your third year studying at one of our partner universities overseas. Some of our previous students have studied in the USA enrolling on exchange programmes at the University of California and at the University of Iowa, in the heart of the Midwest. Other potential year abroad options include universities in Australia and in countries across Europe. There are many career routes open to you after graduation. Previous graduates have gone on to work in environmental agencies and consultancy, GIS applications, planning, conservation and teaching. The flexible skills you learn studying one of our degrees also make you suitable for an even wider job market, from management to the media. For some careers, further qualifications are important. Many of our students progress to postgraduate study, including teacher training and research degrees, as well as various other professional qualifications. When I came to visit Hull felt like home. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, it was somewhere I needed to study. Don t just take our word for it When I came to visit, Hull felt like home. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, it was somewhere I needed to study. I chose Hull because it had a great Geography Department and all the staff were so friendly. The field trip opportunities that are available at Hull were not available elsewhere, and that s something I m interested in. We ve been on two field trips since I started; in my foundation year we went to a nature reserve in Goole. This trimester we went to Shropshire and I found it a good way to meet new staff members and students. It was also a great opportunity to learn new skills in the field. I m hoping to complete my PGCE at the University after graduating, which means that I can progress onto becoming a secondary school teacher. My degree and experience at university will help me, as it s allowed me to learn life skills I ll need as well as practical skills I ll use whilst teaching. It has also allowed me to network with people I never thought I d have the chance to. Rhianna Phillips BA Geography with Foundation Year 4 UNDERGRADUATE COURSE GUIDE
