1 Edexcel B GCSE Geography Course Options For teaching from September 2016 Juniper Hall is an amazing location for fieldwork, set in a quiet wooded valley in an unspoilt area of the chalk North Downs at the edge of Box Hill (less than 10 minutes from the M25). The centre is close to stunning deciduous woodlands, rivers, grasslands and is within reach of the amazing coastline around Birling Gap, offering fantastic opportunities to study primary succession and the rocky shore. Juniper Hall is leased from the National Trust, and is a superb country house dating from the 17th century. The combination of great ecological field sites, superb internet connectivity (including Wi -Fi), workrooms that all have interactive and standard whiteboards, visualisers and access to laptops and ipads, Juniper Hall is ideal for many field courses. Our new courses are designed to fit the criteria of the specifications for first teaching in As such they are designed to Incorporate a number a qualitative and quantitative core geographical skills that students are required to understand. These may include the use of GIS using ArcGIS software. Our courses are designed to meet the criteria of OFQUAL by offering human and physical experiences in the field as a minimum of two fieldwork days. Juniper Hall is part of the London Region; additional fieldwork options are available at Amersham Field Centre, Epping Forest, The Royal Parks (Bushy, Greenwich and Regents) and various urban locations across London.
2 Edexcel B GCSE Juniper Hall fieldwork investigation options Choose one from each environment: Investigating coastal change and conflict or investigating river processes and pressures & either investigating dynamic urban areas or investigating changing rural settlements. In each option students will carry out fieldwork and research as part of their investigations. Investigating coastal change and conflict or Investigating river processes and pressures Investigating how and why drainage basin and channel characteristics influence flood risk for people and property along a river (the river Tillingbourne) in the UK. Specification links, Geographical, Mathematical and Statistical skills Component 2: UK Geographical Issues capable of being investigated through fieldwork in river environments. Students will carry out an investigation into how and why drainage basin and channel characteristics influence flood risk for people and property along the river. This is done with the particular perspective of why the R. Tillingbourne has a low flood risk. Students are invited, though, to consider how and why this is different for the R. Wey & R. Thames. Students will carry out river based fieldwork at 2 sites to investigate at least: A quantitative fieldwork method to measure changes in river channel characteristics such as the low flow channel width, depth and velocity. A qualitative fieldwork method to collect data on factors that might influence flood risk e.g. annotated photographs, field sketches or flood risk assessment of the Tillingbourne catchment from Newlands Corner. Topic 6: Geographical investigations Geographical Skills: Map, Graphical, Data & Information Research and Investigative Skills Mathematics and Statistics Skills: Cartographic, Graphic, Numerical and Statistical Skills. Students will carry out on-site fieldwork, using our hydroslopes, to illustrate the role of land use on surface run off within a drainage basin. Secondary data sources will be provided on land cover, hydrogeology and flood risk for the river catchment.
3 Investigating the impact of coastal (the Sussex coast) management on coastal processes & communities. capable of being investigated through fieldwork in coastal environments. A quantitative fieldwork method to measure how coastal management has affected beach morphology and sediment characteristics e.g. beach profiles and sediment analysis either side of the terminal groyne at Seaford. A qualitative fieldwork method to collect data on coastal management measures and their success e.g. questionnaires or video interviews of residents in Seaford. Secondary data sources will be provided for geology, flood risk and coastal erosion rates in and around Seaford. Investigating dynamic urban areas and Investigating changing rural areas Investigating how and why quality of life varies within urban areas. (Guildford) Students will have an opportunity to develop an understanding of the kinds of questions capable of being investigated through fieldwork in urban environments. A qualitative fieldwork method to collect data on the views and perceptions of quality of life e.g. questionnaires of residents and visitors within Guildford. A quantitative fieldwork method to collect data on environmental quality e.g. noise levels (decibel readings), litter counts, traffic congestion etc. within Guildford. Component 2: UK Geographical Issues Topic 6: Geographical investigations Geographical Skills: Map, Graphical, Data & Information Research and Investigative Skills Mathematics and Statistics Skills: Cartographic, Graphic, Numerical and Statistical Skills. Census and actual crime data will be provided for the two areas with Guildford.
4 Investigating how and why deprivation varies within rural areas in the U.K.. capable of being investigated through fieldwork in urban environments. A qualitative fieldwork method to collect data on the views and perceptions on quality of rural life e.g. questionnaires or video interviews of residents in Brockham village. A quantitative fieldwork method to collect data on environmental quality. Students will use or design their own environmental quality assessment to observe variation around Brockham village. Census and actual crime data will be provided for the two areas with Brockham.
