Primary teaching responsibilities currently include: ENVIRON 559 (co-taught) Fundamentals of Geospatial Analysis This (4 credit hour) course lecture/lab course covers fundamental aspects of geographic information systems and satellite remote sensing for environmental applications. The course covers concepts of geographic data development, cartography, image processing and spatial analysis. This course is the gateway into more advanced training in the geospatial analysis curriculum. ENVIRON 765 (co-taught) Geospatial Analysis for Coastal and Marine Management This (4 credit hour) application course focuses on spatial analysis and image processing applications to support coastal and marine management. The
2 course covers benthic habitat mapping, spatial analysis of marine animal movements, habitat modeling, and the optimization of marine protected areas. The course requires a fundamental knowledge of geospatial analysis theory and analysis tools. ENVIRON 771 Geospatial Field Data Collection This (1 credit hour) field module will provide training in more field data collection and mapping skills such as: GPS usage, field surveying, mobile GIS interfaces (ArcPad), data dictionaries, and sampling design. The course requires a fundamental knowledge of geospatial analysis theory, analysis tools, and applications. ENVIRON 701 (1 credit module) Forest Measurements My role is a 1 credit module on the use of GPS for forest measurement and mapping. Additional courses taught or co-taught ENVIRON 220 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems: Self Paced Course (No longer offered) This (2 credit hour pass/fail) course provides an introduction to Geographic Information Systems, software and analysis methods. The course is based on a series of self-paced modules with all content provided over the Internet. The course covers the basic structure of vector and raster geographic data and spatial analysis methods. The course is intended to provide a self-paced alternative for students interested in gaining an overview of current software and applications. ENVIRON 761 Geospatial Analysis for Conservation Management This (4 credit hour) application course focuses on spatial analysis and image processing applications to support conservation management. The course covers habitat mapping, spatial analysis of animal movements, habitat modeling, and the optimization of nature reserve selection. The course requires a fundamental knowledge of geospatial analysis theory and analysis tools. ENVIRON 857 Remote Sensing for Environmental Analysis This (4 credit hour) advanced lecture/laboratory course will provide training in remote sensing applications for environmental analysis. The course 2
3 covers fundamentals of RS such as the electromagnetic spectrum, image processing and image correction as well applications including classification and change detection. The course requires a fundamental knowledge of geospatial analysis theory, analysis tools, and applications. ENVIRON 859 Advanced Geospatial Analysis This (3 credit hour) advanced lecture/laboratory course will provide training in more advanced skills such as: GIS database programming, modeling applications, spatial decision support systems and Internet Map Server technologies. The course requires a fundamental knowledge of geospatial analysis theory, analysis tools, and applications. Research Research Associate: 1991 to present. Research: Applications of remote sensing and change detection. This work has involved a number of grants from NASA, NSF, SERDP and EPA and many varied projects: Current Research: Satellite based change detection for Marine Corp Base Camp Lejeune as part of the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) Defense Coastal/Esturaine Research Program (DCERP) grant. Past Projects: Alaska Use of Synthetic Aperture Radar to monitor and measure forest fires, carbon storage and release from boreal forest and peat following fire, forest biomass, and soil moisture. Virginia/Everglades Use of Synthetic Aperture Radar to measure water patterns. levels and vegetation North Carolina several projects examining landscape change detection using Landsat Satellite temporal sequences: Urbanization in the rapidly growing Triangle region; spatially characterizing timber harvest and comparing to FIA data for environmental planning; Change detection in the Neuse watershed for 3
4 water quality assessment as a pilot project for the CUASHI (Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science) initiative. I am currently working on a long term SERDP grant examining historical, current and future land-use change at Marine Corp Base Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, North Carolina. Research: Ohio SeaGrant; Control of Blue-Green Algae in lakes and ponds with natural bacterial predators.
