7 i Thomas Ball s Pottery Tables Table 1: Contexts containing locally-made pottery. (Table updated 6/3/2011, 16/3/2011, updated 19/3/2011, 11/4/2011) 2 Table 2: Locally-made pottery found in the three separate areas of the site. Most of the pottery (78% EVE counts) was found in Area A with 22 per cent coming from Area B. (Table produced 23/2/2011, updated 6/3/2011, 19/3/2011, 10/4/2011) 2 Table 3: Quantities of pottery manufactured Thomas Ball, c1801 to This does not include counts for kiln furniture, saggers or setters some of which started their lives as pots. Kiln furniture are discussed below (Section 4.8). (Table produced 23/2/2011, updated 6/3/2011, 19/3/2011, 10/4/2011) 3 Table 4: Fine earthenware was the most common fabric produced by Thomas Ball. (Table produced 23/2/2011, updated 6/3/2011, 19/3/2011, 10/4/2011) 3 Table 5: Fine and coarse earthenware were found in all three decorative categories. The small number of stoneware was all with lead-glazed decoration. (Table produced 23/2/2011, updated 6/3/2011, 19/3/2011) 3 Table 6: Locally-made pottery reused as kiln furniture. These are not included in the counts for locally-made pottery because of their reuse as kiln furniture. They are mostly discussed in Section 4.8 on kiln furniture. (Table produced 23/2/2011) 3 Table 7: Counts of various parts of vessels in the three different types of decorated categories. As discussed above the EVE count is mostly based on the presence of rim sheds to identify individual vessels which are why there are many more EVE counts for rim sheds than for base sherds. (Table produced 14/2/2011, updated 6/3/2011, 19/3/2011, 10/4/2011) 4 Table 8: Lead-glazed, self-slipped and slipped finishes or decorations were found on a range of vessel forms. The majority of lead-glazed vessels were pans, dishes, bowls, crocks, jars and lids. The most common self-slipped forms were lids. There are many unidentified vessels which during the next stage of the re-cataloguing process would most probably be given a vessel shape. (Table produced 23/2/2011, updated 6/3/2011, 19/3/2011) 5 Table 9: Shapes and identified types of vessels. (Table produced 19/3/2011, updated 10/4/2011) 9 Table 10: Rim diameters of lead-glazed pans with the majority ranging between 280mm and 400mm. (Table produced 8/3/2011, updated 19/3/2011) 10 Table 11: Range of fabrics found with various decorations. There were probably three separate clays. (Table produced 23/2/2011, updated 6/3/2011, 19/3/2011) 11 Table 12: Colours of the interior and exterior glazes. Many vessels were glazed on either the interior or the exterior. Eighty-six per cent of lead-glazed vessels have no exterior glaze while 98.8 per cent had an interior glaze. (Table produced 8/3/2011, updated 19/3/2011) 12 Table 13: Types of decorative techniques used on the lead glazed and slipped pottery. Handpainted decoration was the most common (72.1%) with incised (10.9%) and incised and handpainted (7.5%) being the next main decorative categories. All of these have been reviewed. (Table produced 8/3/2011, 19/3/2011, 10/4/2011, 26/4/2011) 13 Table 14: Speckling was found on 21 vessels, bowls (13) and dishes (4) were the most common. (Table produced 9/3/2011, reviewed 19/3/2011, 10/4/2011) 13 Table 15: Various decorative techniques were used on a range of vessel forms. (Table produced 8/3/2011, updated 20/3/2011) 14 Table 16: Vessels shapes and the variety of interior glazes. (Table produced 9/3/2011) 20 Table 17: Range of interior colours found on various vessels. EVE count shown in brackets, see Table 12 for EVE counts of interior glaze colours. (Table produced 9/3/2011, 20/3/2011) 26 Table 18: Range of different qualities identified for the ceramics during cataloguing. (Table produced 13/3/2011, updated 20/3/2011, 10/4/2011) 27 Table 19: Range of shapes associated with the qualities. See also Table 40. (Table produced 13/3/2011, updated 20/3/2011, 4/10/2011) 29 Table 20: Range of shapes associated with the qualities. (Table produced 13/3/2011, updated 20/3/2011, updated 10/4/2011) 31
8 ii Table 21: A number of attachments were found. It is noted that an attachment does not necessarily equate with a vessel. As in the case of lugs there are two lug handles for an crock. It is also possible that some jugs may have had two strap handles. (Table produced 13/3/2011, reviewed 20/3/2011, 30/3/2011) 32 Table 22: Handles associated with lead-glazed vessels were linked with a range of shapes, notably crocks with lug handles and jugs with strap handles. A number of handles were not associated with specific vessel types due to lack of evidence. (Table produced 13/3/2011, reviewed 20/3/2011) 32 Table 23: Range of functional groups with which the pottery is associated. (Table produced 13/3/2011, updated 20/3/2011, 11/4/2011). 33 Table 24: Range of General and Specific Functions with which the pottery is associated. (Table produced 13/3/2011, updated 20/3/2011, 11/4/2011). 34 Table 25: Range of General and Specific functions and shapes. (Table produced 13/3/2011, updated 20/3/2011, 11/4/2011). 37 Table 26: Range of General Functions in lead-glazed pottery with an indication of the quality of the vessels. The predominance of the utilitarian vessels is likely to change following Stage 3 cataloguing. The counts for the faux stoneware category are also likely to change with re-cataloguing. (Table produced 27/3/201, reviewed 13/4/2011) 38 Table 27: Range of General and Specific functions and shapes in lead-glazed pottery with an indication of the quality of the vessel. The predominance of the utilitarian vessels is likely to change following recataloguing. (Table produced 27/3/2011) 42 Table 28: Dishes within the General Function of food are also analysed by Specific Function, Quality and Decoration. All decorated items were reviewed in Stage 2 and most of the dishes were reviewed as part of the re-cataloguing phase. (Table produced 27/3/2011, updated 26/4/2011) 44 Table 29: Counts for faux annular, faux edge ware and faux stoneware. The faux stoneware was not reviewed during Stage 2 re-cataloguing. (Table produced 27/3/2011) 45 Table 30: Handpainted patterns identified from Thomas Ball s Pottery. See Appendix Table 31: Variety of incised vessels, some with multiple incised decorations and some had handpainted decoration, as well as marbled clay, moulded and green speckled decoration. (Table produced 29/3/2011, updated 10/4/2011) 47 Table 32: Decorated vessels were found in these contexts and pits in Areas A and B. Decorated vessels were found in the three main contexts and features in Areas A and B. (Table produced 29/3/2011, updated 26/4/2011) 47 Table 33: Incised, marbled and moulded vessels were found contexts and pits in Areas A and B.
