2 Program Description The Bachelor of Applied Geographic Information Systems program (BGIS) provides the skills & knowledge to succeed in one of the fastest growing sectors of information technology Combines the power of relational database management systems with the flexibility of cartographic display technology and is used for problem solving and decision making 2 year applied degree Consists of two 15 week semesters Paid practicum in year two 2 intakes per year September (64 students) January (32 students)

3 Capstone Project Provides practical experience in the design, planning, development, implementation and presentation of a GIS project Industry format course Learners are accountable for results, not only time spent Students report to their client/instructor at regular intervals presenting results, achievements and results Students work with an industry mentor Mentors are members of industry (not just GIS) that share their experience and knowledge to help students grow as a professional

4 Capstone Project The capstone project ties all courses and associated modules into a seamless term project. Some of the highlighted learning includes: practical experience in the design, planning, development, implementation and presentation of a project; enhance technical skills through the application of course work to a real-world project; enhance soft skills through a mentor/mentee relationship with a real-world industry client; gain an appreciation for a typical GIS project lifecycle; teamwork; and leadership

5 Capstone Project The capstone project course is co-taught by two instructors Wade Hawkins & Jamie Johnston-Stewart Groups can bounce ideas off one or both instructors Provides students with different perspectives Gives students a balanced approach to the project
