Specific topics include ionic bonding and the nature of solids, the structure of atoms and simple bonding theory, and selected topics in main group chemistry. The preparation, analysis and observation of inorganic compounds are the laboratory assignments. Course Prerequisites CHEM / or equivalent (grade of C- or better) Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes Obtain a more comprehensive understanding of basic concepts (atomic structure, periodic trends, ionic and covalent bonding theories) Introduce theories of the solid state (survey of main structure types, lattice energies, Born-Haber cycles, band theory, semiconductors, conductors, insulators) Obtain an introductory knowledge of molecular symmetry (symmetry elements and operations, point groups, character tables) Apply principles of molecular symmetry to prediction of NMR spectra and molecular orbital theory of nonlinear polyatomic molecules Gain familiarity with synthetic and measurement techniques in inorganic chemistry through hands on laboratory experiments Improve problem solving skills through testing and laboratory problem sheets Improve scientific literacy and independent learning through assigned textbook reading Obtain a basic understanding of solution phase multinuclear NMR spectroscopy as it applies to Main Group compounds Obtain an introductory knowledge of the reactivity and structure of the Main Group elements 1

A grade of at least 17.5/35 in the laboratory component. Conversion of numerical grades to Final Letter Grades follows the Dalhousie Common Grade Scale Other Course Requirements A B C D A B C F <50 A B C Chemistry Safety Module and Quiz: Chemicals and laboratory equipment can pose serious hazards if they are not treated with an appropriate amount of caution. As a chemistry student, part of your training involves understanding the hazards that are present within a chemistry laboratory and learning the measures that must be taken in order to maximize the safety of you and your peers. You are REQUIRED to read the Chemistry Safety Module in your 2101 Lab Manual and complete the online safety quizzes, with perfect marks, by January 15, 2017 at 11:30 pm. Students who do not successfully complete this requirement will not be allowed to perform experiments in any Dalhousie undergraduate chemistry laboratory until the module is completed. If a lab session is missed due to an incomplete safety module, the instructor is not obligated to provide a make-up session. Course Policies Questions Regarding Material on the Syllabus: Significant effort has been invested in preparing this syllabus. If a student asks a question regarding anything posted in the syllabus (i.e., when is the first midterm?) the instructor will simply say, please consult the syllabus. 2

3 Class Announcements: The instructor will use the Announcements section on Brightspace when possible. However, anything stated or announced in lecture is considered to be common knowledge. If you want to be informed on all topics, come to lecture. Missed Midterms: If you miss a midterm for any reason, no make-up will be offered. If documentation supporting a valid excuse for the absence is presented within 7 days of a missed midterm (such as a note from a physician or funeral director), the marks allocated to the missed midterm will be transferred to the value of the final exam. Without documentation, a grade of 0 will be assigned for the missed midterm. Alternative Exam Weighting: The goal is that students demonstrate a mastery of the subject material by the end of the course. Should a student perform better on the final exam than one or both midterms, the weight of the respective midterm(s) may be decreased by 10% (15%à5%) and the weight of the final exam increased accordingly (35%à45% or 55%). To qualify for this alternative evaluation, students must write the midterms and must not commit any academic offenses in this course. Missed Laboratory Sessions: There are three valid reasons for missing a lab: 1) acute illness, 2) a death in the family requiring your attendance at a funeral and 3) participation in prescheduled University Athletics events. All require a note from a University athletics director, physician, or funeral director. Personal Protective Equipment in the Laboratory: No student will be allowed to work in the lab without approved safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and a properly fitting cotton lab coat (sleeves cannot be rolled up). Lab coats and glasses can be purchased in the Dalhousie Bookstore. Lab Preparation: For safety reasons, students are expected to come to the lab having completed adequate preparation in advance according to the guidelines stated in the laboratory manual. For this reason students will write a quiz at the beginning of each lab session. The instructor reserves the right to ask any student to leave the laboratory if they are deemed unprepared to conduct the lab in a safe and efficient manner. No make-up session will be provided in these cases. Completion of Laboratory Sessions: All lab sessions are 4 hours in length, which is ample time for a prepared student to complete the work and perform all clean up and organizational tasks. Students will complete their work (including clean up) by the end of the lab period in all cases. To facilitate this, students will terminate all lab work 30 minutes before the official end of the lab period and use the remaining time to clean up their lab space, wash glassware and label samples for submittal. Budget your time accordingly. Attending your lab section: You must attend the lab section for which you have registered. The labs are full, so it will not be possible to attend a session on a different day. Students asking to come on a different lab day in the middle of the term will be refused. Laboratory Exemptions: If you have taken this course before, you may apply for a laboratory exemption. To do so, contact the instructor during office hours before the beginning of the laboratory period. The instructor will then seek documentation within the department proving that you passed the lab component previously. Late Penalties for Laboratory Report Sheets and Take-Home Assignments: 10% deduction for each weekday late, up to a maximum of 50% deduction. Collaboration vs. Copying on Assignments and Lab Report Sheets: Students are encouraged to work together, discuss, debate, etc. when doing the take-home assignments, etc. However, copying the work of another student (or providing work for someone else to copy) is a violation of the Dalhousie Academic Integrity Policy (see below) and is subject to academic penalty. It is far better to pass in the work late or incomplete than to copy the work of someone else. 3
