Your initiative. Your big Plans. Most of all, bring your Ambition TCC Mission Statement Tulsa Community College betters its community through the intellectual achievement, creative energy, and responsible citizenship of its students, faculty, and staff by their engagement in teaching, learning, and service opportunities that transform and enrich lives. Tulsa Community College commits to innovative, flexible, and affordable public higher education that responds to a dynamic global environment. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Apply observations, safety and techniques to basic laboratory procedures. 2. Solve problems using proper precision and units. 3. Apply the rules of nomenclature to inorganic substances. 4. Make use of quantitative relationships from chemical formulas and chemical equations. 5. Prepare solutions. 6. Analyze reactions in aqueous solutions. 7. Analyze the energy changes of chemical reactions and physical processes. 8. Predict the electronic structure of atoms and ions. 9. Explain observable periodic properties. 10. Explain physical properties using the concepts of chemical bonding, molecular geometry, and polarity. 2

3 Activity Percentage (%) Exams 36 Quizzes 16 Homework 16 Labs 16 Final Exam 16 Total 100 Note this is a weighted grade format. Some activities will account for a higher percent of the total grade. Approximate Grading Scale: 90% - 100% A 80% % B 70% % C 60% % D 0% % F Evaluation Techniques: Exam and Quiz Dates: Exam dates are Feb 6 th, Mar 8 th, Apr 19 th and the COMPREHENSIVE FINALS will be during the week of May 1 and 3. All exams count towards your final grade. You are allowed only one makeup exam. The final COMPREHENSIVE EXAM can count as a makeup exam. The COMPREHENSIVE FINAL can also be used to replace a lower exam score. There will be four quizzes; the quiz dates will be announced in advance. Grade appeals have to be made within 7 DAYS of getting the exam or quiz back for review. Homework assignments: There will be a homework set for each chapter that will be assigned for grade. Other problem sets will be assigned for practice. If you are shooting for a good grade it is imperative that you do your assignments. I cannot emphasis enough the importance of doing the homework questions, this course is best done by continuous practice. I recommend that you spend 2 hours a day to go thru your work and your homework to stay abreast with all the material. LATE SUBMISSIONS (BASED ON DUE DATES ON THE CALENDAR) OF HOMEWORK WILL RESULT IN A PENALTY OF 10 % FOR EACH DAY THE HOMEWORK IS LATE.) Inside Story Headline Participation: Participation in the class is a key part of the learning process. The classes are planned to have a major component of student participation so that I can gauge how well the material is being received and calibrate it as required. Reading the text before the class will be a vital part of understanding the material that will be taught. Asking questions is highly recommended and encouraged. Bonus points/extra credit: There will be bonus questions that will be included on your exams and will count as bonus points. Extra credit points will be periodically assigned. The bonus points and extra credit will be assigned and added to the respective activity in the calculation of the grade. Makeup Exams: You are allowed only one makeup exam. The final COMPREHENSIVE EXAM can count as a makeup exam. 3

4 4 Important Information: Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of F, which may have financial aid consequences for the student Communications: All TCC students receive a designated MyTCC address (ex: jane.doe@tulsacc.edu). All communications to you about TCC and course assignments will be sent to your MyTCC address; and you must use MyTCC to send to, and receive from, the instructor regarding this course. Inclement Weather: TCC rarely closes. If extreme weather conditions or emergency situations arise, TCC always gives cancellation notices to radio and television stations. This information is also posted on the TCC website ( ) CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: Open and mutually respectful communication of varied opinions, beliefs, and perspectives during classroom or online discussion encourages the free exchange of ideas that is essential to higher learning and to the ability to learn from each other. Use of any electronic device is at the discretion of the instructor. Cell phones will be switched off during class time if one has to have the phones on for a valid reason they should be on vibrate mode. SYLLABUS CHANGES: Occasionally, changes to the syllabus may be necessary. Students will be notified of any changes to the syllabus in writing. DISABILITY RESOURCES: It is the policy and practice of Tulsa Community College to create inclusive learning environments. Accommodations for qualifying students in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are available. To request accommodations, contact the Education Access Center (EAC) at eac@tulsacc.edu or call (918) (Voice). Deaf and hard of hearing students may text (918) ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may: Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test; Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question; Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class; Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services INSTITUTIONAL STATEMENT: Each student is responsible for being aware of the information contained in the TCC Catalog, the TCC Student Policies & Resources Handbook, and semester information listed in the class schedule.
