1 CHEM 1100 General Chemistry I: Summer 2019 Course Overview: This course provides an introduction to chemistry. We will explore the key concepts of the science of chemistry. Topics covered in this course include: measurement and units, matter and energy, stoichiometry and chemical equations, molecular bonding and structure, gases, solution chemistry, equilibrium and nuclear chemistry. Upon completing the course successfully, students will develop a general understanding of the structures and properties of chemical systems. Required Materials: Textbook: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach, Nivaldo J Tro, 4th edition. Course Information & Requirements: Total Class Sessions: 25 Class Sessions per Week: 5 Total Weeks: 5 Class Session Length (minutes): 120 Credit Hours: 4 Language of Instruction: English Please do not use electronic devices such as phones, ipads, computers, etc. during the lectures. Attendance: Your attendance is mandatory. Attendance will be recorded every time. Each student will have three (3) allowed absences, so no grade deduction will be made for the first three absences. More than three unexcused absences will result in an automatic reduction in your participation grade, for instance from A- to B+. Your active participation in the class is expected and 1 Chongqing University
2 encouraged. Course Assignments: Quizzes: There will be five quizzes in total, which account for 15% of the final grade. No make-up quiz will be given. Exams: Exams will take place in class. There should be absolutely no sharing of information sheets, calculators, or other resources during the exam. Cell phones may not be used as calculators. Any violation of these rules will result in a grade of 0 for all involved parties. Both the midterms and the final are closed-book exams.
