CHEM 1120 covers atoms and electrons, bonding, absorption of energy by molecules, gases, liquids, solids, crystals, and organic chemistry. Prerequisites: CHEM 1118 with "C-" or BCSecS Chem 12 with "A" or "B" or successful score on the Chemistry Diagnostic Test. In addition, one of MATH 1152 or BCSecS Math 12 with "C "or MDT 75. Friday, December 2 Quizzes will be held at the beginning of class on pre-announced Mondays. I will give one week s notice prior to each quiz. Laboratory The first laboratory exercise is on Wednesday, September 14. The full laboratory schedule will be available from the coordinator on the first day. Mandatory safety glasses will be provided to you. Lab coats are optional. They are available at the bookstore for a cost of $ You must complete the laboratory section to pass the course, and it is mandatory to attend ALL lab classes. If you are late to a lab, or omit the pre-lab assignment, you may not be allowed to continue. If you cannot attend a lab, get in contact with me as soon as possible. 2

3 Important Policies Missed Midterms, Labs, and Quizzes There are no make-up exams or labs in this course. If you miss a quiz, a midterm exam, or a lab for genuine reasons of illness or bereavement, etc., or if you know that you will miss one, please see me as soon as possible with documented evidence. At my discretion, I will re-weight your grade accordingly. If you do not provide sufficiently compelling evidence for your absence, you will be assigned 0 for that component of the course. If you miss the final exam, you will automatically be accorded a grade of N, and you will have to take your case to the Dean s office. You cannot miss more than two labs, regardless of reasons. If you do, you will automatically be assigned N for the course. Transferability: To obtain first year chemistry transfer credits to UBC, you need to pass both Langara Chem 1120 and 1220, i.e., (Langara Chem ) (UBC Chem ). Refer to for more information. Repeating the Course: If you have taken, or are taking a chemistry course in a given semester, you will not be allowed to register to repeat that course in the semester immediately following until the registration date and time assigned to those students who have 8 registration points. 5 Use instruments to make careful measurements, and understand how to record and interpret data to solve a range of problems in general chemistry. Demonstrate a basic understanding of quantum mechanics and the wave-particle duality of matter. Assign a valid set of quantum numbers to an electron in an atom. Write down the electronic configuration of a given element. Correlate electronic structure with the chemical reactivity of atoms, and identify and understand the trends of various atomic properties within the periodic table. Explain how chemical bonding, whether it be covalent, ionic, or metallic, is governed by the properties of the bonding atoms. Describe and differentiate between models of chemical bonding Lewis structures, Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory (VSEPR), Valence Bond Theory (VBT), and Molecular Orbital Theory (MOT). Predict the geometries and dipole moments of a range of simple molecules by VSEPR. Draw s-, p-, and d-orbitals, understand hybridization, and use these concepts to understand the shapes of molecules. Correlate the physical properties of molecules with their structures. Demonstrate a foundational understanding of organic chemistry, with an emphasis on structure. Describe how carbon, hydrogen, and a few other elements can combine in innumerable ways to give complex structures that can be studied systematically. Apply IUPAC nomenclature to relatively simple organic compounds and identify major functional groups. Draw organic compounds using full structural formulae, condensed formulae, and line (skeletal) formulae. Understand isomerism, and differentiate between different types constitutional, geometric (cis/trans and E/Z), and stereo (enantiomers). Conduct a conformational analysis of simple alkanes using Newman projections. 5

I will mark your quizzes, midterm and final exams in a timely fashion. As much as possible, I will try to explain the course topics clearly and enthusiastically in interesting and well-organized ways.
