On Sunday March 24th Hidex is celebrating 20 years in the liquid scintillation counting community. Method to validate beef needed?
Contents Hidex 300 SL overview Different models of Hidex 300 SL Highlights of example data Bayesian statistics New methods for Strontium measurements Triathler Becquerel Finder
Hidex 300 SL Automatic Liquid Scintillation Counter
Hidex 300 SL Samples in trays Only commercial TDCR counter on the market Powerful alpha/beta separation Variety of options
Hidex 300 SL super low level Improved lead shield design Guard detectors for active shielding Cooling system recommend for improved counting efficiencies A dedicated table
Product offering for Hidex 300 SL Hidex 300 SL standard 1. Standard model with many options 1. Low leve PM tubes 2. Alpha Beta separation 3. External Standard 4. Cooling of instrument Hidex 300 SL Super Low Level 1. Top of the range performance 2. Recommend for environmental applications and high performance research needs Hidex 300 SL Metrology 1. Special TDCR version with all possible data output for TDCR calculations 2. Options available
Software Windows 7 compatible Extensive application library and excellent support Combination of different parameter files is possible
Example data Hidex 300 SL recent application highlights
Example data high luminescence 3ml 2M NaOH + 17 ml OptiPhase HiSafe 3 Extremely high luminescence Triple Coincidences are OK immediately 3mL 2M NaOH +17mL Hionic Fluor Even here we see some luminescence but again Triple Coincidences are OK immediately
Example data Blood samples Blood sample with red color H-3 counting efficiency of less than 5% Three PM tubes gave better counting efficiency compared to other commercial LSC TDCR gave outstanding quench correction results DPM sample doped with DPM
Alpha Beta separation Rn extracted into Maxilightht Graphical tool is very powerful for optimising alpha beta separation settings
14 Bayesian statistics in LSC More realistic approach to measurement uncertainty Incorporates also so called type b errors such as error of calibration source International norm ISO came into effect Quality management becomes increasingly important in LSC (accredited labs must apply ISO 11929) Demand for calculation of characteristic limits after ISO 11929
15 Example calculations for Hidex 300 SL Hidex together with FCI in Germany and help from KIT prepared a MS Excel worksheet to calculate the characteristic limits according to ISO (with calibration source) MikroWin software template Both solution now available from Hidex
16 Conclusion on Bayesian statistics Thomas Bayes provided a more realistic approach to measurement uncertainty Bayesian statistic will be increasingly important for LSC measurements and quality management The differences between Bayesian and conventional statistics are comparably small when it comes to LSC (but not negligible) The application of ISO for LSC is relatively easy and first templates are available
Rapid measurement of Strontium with TDCR-Cerenkov method
Y-90 Cerenkov TDCR vs. Real efficiency (PTB, Germany) Eff TDCR
Measurement steps for Sr-90/Y-90 Samples can be measured immediately after sample preparation e.g. Radiochemical separation: Y-90 measured immediately with TDCR-Čerenkov-Counting After adding cocktail Sr-90/Y-90 measured in standard LSC mode Amount of Sr-90 calculated with substraction
Results with Hidex 300 SL (Februar 2013) Sample Čerenkov (Y-90) Bq in Vial LSC (Sr-90, Y-90) Bq in Vial Sr-90 (Difference of LSC-Čerenkov) Bq in Vial True activity (Sr-90) Bq in Vial 1 1,214 2,351 1,137 1, ,107 0,219 0,111 0, ,049 0,115 0,066 0, ,023 0,053 0,031 0,025
Triathler Becquerel finder Products for nuclear safety
Products for Nuclear safety On March 11, 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake shook the Tohoku region in Japan. A resulting Tsunami caused horrible damage. The tsunami also hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant resulting in a series of overheatings and explosions in the reactors.
Isotopes after fallout Gamma emitters I-131 Cs-134 and Cs-137 Beta emitters Sr-89, Sr-90 Alpha emitters Pu-239 and Am-241 Must be monitored in Baby food, Dairy produce Other Foodstuff, Liquid foodstuff,
Triathler multilabel tester Triathler multilabel tester offers good mobile capability to measure gamma isotopes with the internal well type NaI detector. The Triathler is small, can be equipped with a field case with battery or can be operated directly from 12V DC cigarette lighter plug. Triathler NaI detector accepts tubes and vials with 13 mm diameter.
Becquerel Finder The Triathler NaI system and external NaI detector is available with alternative Lead shield and planar type NaI detector. This enables the use of so called Marinelli Beakers. This gives the possibility to use large sample volumes of 1L and minimum detectable activity is dramatically reduced. Marinelli beaker is placed around the NaI detector which allows total sample volume of 1L and thus decreases the minimum detectable activities significantly.
Detection of Beta emitters Both Triathler LSC and MLT are equipped with the possibility to measure beta emitters from various sample matrices. Water samples can be measured directly, but other sample matrices can present challenges and may require extensive sample preparation procedures. In emergency response Sr- 90 is important isotope. Triathler has been employed in several studies to measure Sr-90 from water, urine or nasal swab samples. Also food and soil samples have been measured. Eichrom and Triskem International provide radiochemistry methods for measurement of Sr-90 from food and milk.
Detection of Alpha emitters Triathler is also suitable for detecting alpha emitting isotopes. Triathler has been used in several publications and studies for especially Am- 241 in an emergency setup. Triathler LSC and MLT are available with the alpha beta separation that provides extremely sensitive instrument for alpha emitters. Applications vary from measurement of water to urine and even nasal swabs. Radiochemistry requirements must be considered
