Heatcapacities ofsm(val)cl 3 6H 2 O were measured with ahigh 鄄 precision automatic adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range from 80 to 376 K. Alarge step in heat capacity was detected around 308 K, which may be attributed to aglass transition corresponding to freezing of structuraldisorder.

Apeak of absorption could be observed near 1.3 ev. The absorption coefficient increased with the increase of the Mn content, but its amplitude tended to decrease. So moderate Mn concentration should be chosen to achieve ferromagnetic properties and higher absorption coefficient.
