3 INTRODUCTION The Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, in association with Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi and The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI)Allahabad organizes programmes for the improvement of science education in Universities and Colleges throughout the country. The Department of Chemistry of Bharathidasan Institute of Technology, Anna University, Tiruchirappalli ispleased to organize and host a two-day Lecture Workshop on March 7 and 8, This Lecture Workshop is expected to inspire the younger generation to undertake research in materials chemistry. M.Sc& M.Phil. students, s and Faculty Members are invited to participate in this Lecture Workshop and reap the benefits Recent Advances in Materials Chemistry students.
4 WORKSHOP ABSTRACT The theme of the workshop is to emphasize the significance of the advanced materials preparations, characterizations and their potential applications. This would be a great multidisciplinary platform for the interaction with reputed scientists, academicians and industrialists. It also opens up avenues by bringing the recent researches for industrial applications for the societal development and human well-being. The Workshop will also provide a common platform for interaction of the young students with the following galaxy of learned academicians from Central Universities, IIT s, IISc and leading CSIR Institutions in India.
5 WORKSHOP OVERVIEW The workshop covered scientific presentations in the wide range of topic, which included all aspects of Materials Chemistry related to energy generation, conversion and storage especially in the context of India. Workshop was provides a forum for the interaction with reputed scientists, academicians and students. It also opens up avenues by bringing the recent research for industrial applications for the societal development in materials chemistry. applications. The workshop covered Environmental Materials - the design, synthesis and Biomaterials, green biomaterials and advanced synthesis methods of biomaterials. Electrochemical and photoelectrochemical applications of materials. Electronic, Magnetic and Optical Materials encompassing inorganic, organic, hybrid and nano materials, soft matter and interfaces. 8 INAUGURATION The workshop started with the traditional lamp lighting ceremony followed by warm hearted welcome of guests and participants by delivering the welcome address by Dr. R. Thiruneelakandan, Head, Dept. of Chemistry, BIT campus. Accompanying this Prof.S. Natarajan, SSCU, IISc., Bangalore explained about the activities Science academies. Prof. R.Ramaraj, MK University, Madurai briefed about the workshop. Prof. S. Chandrasekaran, FASc., FNA., FTWAS.,President, CRSI, offered the inaugural address. He was point out the role of materials chemistry in everyday life and need of invention of new materials for sustainable development of country. In the end of inaugural function Dr. K. Jothivenkatachalam, coordinator proposed vote of thanks.
9 TECHNICAL SESSION I Day 1( ) The distinguished speakers delivered lectures related on various topics including material chemistry, challenges and opportunities. The first technical session started with a special lecture byprof. S. Chandrasekaran, FASc., FNA., FTWAS.,President, CRSI on Chemistry of Donor- Acceptor (DA) Cyclopropanes. Prof.S. Natarajan, FASc., FNASc., FNA., Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has delivered a lecture on Color and Chemistry. TECHNICAL SESSION II The third lecture was given by Prof. R. Ramaraj, FASc., FNASc., School of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai on the Photoelectrochemistry and Solar Energy Conversion. The fourth lecture was delivered by Prof. S. Natarajan on the Inorganic- Organic Hybrids: Synthesis, Structure and Properties.
10 TECHNICAL SESSION III Day 2 ( ) The first session of the second day of the workshop started with Prof. N. Sathyamurthy, FASc., FNA., FTWAS.,Director, Indian Institute of Science Education & (IISER), Mohali delivering a lecture on Symmetry in Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Then Prof.AnunaySamanta, FASc., FNASc., FNA., School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad delivered a lecture on Exploiting Photoexcited Molecules for Sensing Environments. Dr. V. Subramanian, FASc., FNASc.,Principal Scientist, Central Leather Institute, Adyar, Chennai talked about Unravelling the Interaction of Nanomaterials with Biomolecules Using Classical Molecular Dynamics Simulation. TECHNICAL SESSION IV Prof. P. Selvam, FRSC.,Dept. of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Chennai delivered a lecture and highlighted the importance of Ordered Nanoporous Materials and their Applications. The last lecture was delivered by Dr. K. Vijayamohanan, FASc., Director, Central Electrochemical Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi on Electrochemistry and Our Common Future. During both the days, the student participants with great enthusiasm interacted with the speakers and continued their discussion even after the sessions
11 were ovver. Some of the studdents expressed that it was a raare opportuunity to atttend such a lecture l program weree they can interact i wiith the leadding scientiists of Indiia.
