1 Brief note on GIS and Mapping Training Course Venue: Arnold Bhavan, 8-11, Ravindra Nagar, Habsiguda, Hyderabad Duration: Aug 2018 Water and Livelihoods Foundation organized a training program on GIS and Mapping (Basic Skills Course) for NGO workers & Development professionals during 17 th 18 th August The objective of the course is to impart basic skills on digital map making using GIS tools for NGO workers and development professionals. A total of 20 participants, from various NGOs and few individual researchers, had attended this training program. Mr. R.V. Ramamohan, Executive Director - Water and Livelihoods Foundation (WLF) facilitated the training program. Participants from different districts of Telangana, Andhra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra eagerly participated in this training program and acquired basic skills in GIS. The training course was designed to suit the requirements of different NGOs, individual researchers and their on-going developmental projects. The course schedule was divided into five Sessions having a total of 15 Lectures. After introducing the essential concepts of Mapping and GIS, participants were exposed to various case study projects on themes viz., 1
2 Urban air quality mapping; Land use mapping in rural areas; Water resources and basin mapping; Applications of GIS in health infrastructure mapping and Applications in forestry sector. Apart from this, few tools and softwares that are related to image processing; file format conversion; and google satellite image extraction were also introduced to the participants. The training was done through live demonstration of these projects on Google Earth / QGIS software, with simultaneous practice by all the participants on their own laptop computers. To facilitate this, necessary softwares, tools and data files were provided to all the participants in a pen drive. Mapping is an important aspect of development work, helping to visualize the developmental interventions and monitoring temporal changes. This short training course met the participants needs of digital mapping skills and basic operations of QGIS. At the end of this training course, most of the participants could develop simple digital maps, such as, point data maps, point-line-polygon feature maps, land-use and forest resource maps, spatial trends of health, education facilities and watershed boundary maps using QGIS. End of the program, participants felt happy for introducing the basic concepts of GIS and facilitating practice sessions on the same. Since it is a new subject, more practice is required and to apply the knowledge in their on-going projects. Research students pursing PhD courses felt that it will help them to add value to their on-going research work in integrated water resources planning. Finally, participants thanked WLF for this wonderful opportunity and suggested to organize a refresher course after couple of months later, if possible. Note: Session plan and list of participants attached to this note as Annexures 1 & 2. 2
