1 Divisin f Teaching Labs Plicies and Prcedures When participating in labratry sessins in the Divisin f Teaching Labs (DTL) at the University f Trnt (UfT), Faculty f Medicine, there are several plicies and best practices that must be fllwed. Here at DTL we cnstantly strive t prvide the safest envirnment pssible. T this end we ask that each student read the fllwing plicies and prcedures. Keep in mind that as a UfT student, under the Cde f Student Cnduct, yu are expected t abide by these plicies and prcedures. PART ONE: GENERAL LAB POLICIES AND PROCEDURES GENERAL RULES 1. Always act in a respnsible manner in the lab. 2. Always be prepared by reading thrugh the lab instructins prir t cming t class. Always check-in with yur instructr befre prceeding with an experiment and if yu are unsure f any f the directins r hw t perate particular equipment. 3. Keep wrk areas clean and tidy at all times. Likewise keep the flr and aisles clear. Bring nly the necessary labratry materials (e.g. lab manual and ntebk) t yur bench. Other items (cats, backpacks, etc.) shuld be stred in the designated areas in the lab rm. 4. Always respect yur fellw students and ther persnnel in the lab. T help reduce the pssibility f accidents yu shuld at all times be cncentrating n what yu are ding, and at n time shuld yu engage in any frm f hrseplay. 5. Never cnsume fd r beverages r place any fd/beverage items n any lab surfaces including the Interlabs. Never dispse f fd r beverage waste in lab garbage bins. If yu wish t cnsume fd r beverages yu may d s ut in the hallways and dispse f the fd/beverage waste in the hallway garbage bins. 6. Dress apprpriately fr all lab activities by wearing clsed-te shes and lng pants. Always tie back lng/lse hair and secure any dangling jewellery. 7. Wear the apprpriate persnal prtective equipment, PPE, (e.g. glves, gggles, lab cat) as directed by yur instructr. A fully buttned up lab cat is required t participate in all wet lab sessins. Each student must bring their wn lab cat t the lab, which can be purchased frm the Bkstre r MedStres n campus. Stre yur lab cat in a plastic bag separate frm yur ther belngings. 8. Keep yur hands away frm yur face, eyes, muth and bdy. D nt handle any prtable devices, such as cellphnes, laptps, r ther devices with glved r unwashed hands. 9. 4 WORKING WITH ANIMAL SAMPLES Divisin f Teaching Labs Plicies and Prcedures Overview: Animal wrk is typically cnducted in the Department f Cmparative Medicine s (DCM) facilities. Students will receive training frm DCM and must cmply with their rules and regulatins fr prper animal care. Fr animal experiments cnducted in DTL, students will receive hands-n training frm the Curse Crdinatr, teaching assistant, r a DCM staff member. Prcedures at DTL: Animal prducts are cllected in bidegradable GREEN BAGS. DO NOT place any ther materials such as glves, paper twels, tips, needles, etc., in these bags. Students are respnsible fr the surgical instruments that they use. All surgical instruments must be saked and washed after each use t prevent damage. Instructins will be prvided in the lab. Phtgraphing any animal wrk is nt permissible given the sensitive nature surrunding the use f animals in experiments. WORKING WITH HUMAN SAMPLES Wrking with and dispsing f human samples: Universal Precautins must be taken whenever cnducting experiments invlving human bld and any ther ptentially infectius material (e.g. saliva, urine, etc.). Since we cannt determine by eye whether such materials may be infectius, we must treat them as if they are infected and handle and dispse f them as ptentially infectius materials. These materials and all cntaminated waste generated during these experiments are dispsed f in YELLOW BIOHAZARD PAILS. In the case f an accident invlving human bld r ther ptentially infectius material: If yu are bleeding, ntify yur instructr immediately. D nt ask fellw classmates fr assistance s that we minimize the risk f expsure t thers. If yur injury allws, yu may be asked t help clean up any cntaminated areas. Anyne wh assists an injured party shuld wear glves t prtect themselves. All cntaminated areas must be prperly disinfected and infectius waste dispsed f in the YELLOW BIOHAZARD PAILS. WORKING IN A CONTAINMENT LEVEL 2 ROOM Rms that are zned as Cntainment Level 2 (CL2) have special rules: v Users f these rms may nt bring persnal items (e.g. backpacks, cats, etc.) int these rms. Designated strage rms will be prvided fr yu t stre yur persnal belngings. v Lab cats used in these rms must stay in these rms. At the end f the curse, yur lab cat will be disinfected and washed, and returned t yu. Currently, DTL rms 3282, 3284, 3379, 3381, 3383 and 3397 are designated as CL2 (indicated by signs n the drs).
