2 SSOS GENERAL MEETING MINUTES 11 September 2017 Frank extended a welcome to our members and guests. He asked for a member to motion that the August minutes which were printed in the Bulletin and distributed either by mail or were accurate. Gary Hodder motioned they were correct. Carried. We are waiting to hear if we have a speaker for our October meeting. We have asked a number of people but unfortunately they were unable to present to us. Correspondence received Newsletters from OSNSW, Eastern Suburbs, Eurobodalla, North Shore and Bankstown Orchid societies Elermore Orchids Spring catalogue August catalogue from Windermere Orchids Flyer for Barita Orchids Open Day on 22 October 2017 at Kulnura Flyer for Royale Open Weekend from October at Peats Ridge Flyer for Revesby Workers Australian Native Orchid Club's Native Orchid Show featuring Sarcochilus species and hybrids on Saturday 14 October at Revesby Workers Club, Revesby. Thea Shaughnessy, AOC Secretary advised Denis Fett has withdrawn his nomination for AOC Deputy Registrar of Judging for health reasons. This means that the position of Deputy Registrar is not now contested, as Ian Chalmers is the only remaining nomination. New Members - Nil Tonight Michael Dimon presented to members on the different varieties of Vanda orchids and highlighted their showy and intensely colourful flowers. He spoke on how particular varieties can be grown in different environments. Thank you to Michael for such an interesting talk. ITEMS OF INTEREST Our Spring show will be held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A mention should appear in the What's On column in The Leader this week as well as an article promoting the show. We may have an ad in the Pictorial News so look out for them. Last week Jan, Rhonda, John Costa and Frank Daniel walked around Taren Point to distribute flyers to homes and place A4 posters in shops. Jan and George also distributed flyers north of the Taren Point Bridge and the Shire. We hope this will attract people to the show. The Show Schedule and conditions of entry and plant booking in form, were sent out with the Bulletin. If you didn't receive it please let Richard know. Set up for the show is on Wednesday afternoon and members were asked to assist. Members can bring their plants on Wednesday between 2 and 5pm as the room has to be vacated by 6pm. Frank requested that members complete the plant booking in sheet and the yellow plant cards for all plants to be displayed. OCTOBER: To be confirmed NOVEMBER: Janardanan Mohandas who takes stunning photos of native orchids DECEMBER: Christmas party 2 The volunteer roster was circulated and members' assistance on Thursday in particular was requested, as there were lots of vacancies. The other days are mostly filled. If members could spare some time to assist in making the show a success they were asked to do so.

3 People volunteering on the sales table were asked to - make sure price tag is taken out of the pot when the plant is sold; - leave the plant tag in the pot; - don't talk customers out of buying someone's plants in favour of your own; - only people who have put their names on the sales table roster are to man the table; and We are supplying Phallies to a few of the Year 4 classes in primary schools near Caringbah High school. The plants will be judged on the best cared for plant and there will be a drawing competition as well. Irene Chalmers and Helen Mason will be visiting the schools to talk to the children on how to care for the orchids. We hope this will draw the children and their parents to the show and encourage the children to grow orchids. - discredit others orchids by calling them "weeds". Volunteers on Security were asked to be mindful of people who have purchased plants on the sales table and then bring the bags into the display area, so that our plants don't go missing, and to monitor that people don't touch the plants on display. Raffles ticket sellers are asked to complete a survey to ask people how they heard about the show. We want to assess how useful the flyers are in advertising the show. Unfortunately Bushcare and Val the bird lady won't be attending so we won't have their sponsorship. Richard will post a note on the Society's Facebook site to promote the show. Frank asked members to like the Society's facebook page and promote the show to their friends. Frank advised there will not be another meeting before the Orchid Spectacular which will be held from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 October. Times of the show are 9.00 am pm Friday and Saturday, 9.00 am pm on Sunday. Set up is on Wednesday afternoon and helpers are required to assist in setting up the display. The theme this year will be nautical. Members can bring your plants on Wednesday between 4:30 to 6pm. The volunteer roster was circulated tonight and members were asked to volunteer for security and to assist John Costa on the sales table. Free passes for the Spectacular were issued at the meeting. For those who didn't attend the meeting, they will be able to collect a pass at the Spring Show. They will only be mailed to Life members. The Orchid Spectacular committee are running a promotion in the local schools to attract young people to growing orchids. This year, in addition to the usual Judges awards there will be a "popular choice" award. When people enter they will be given a ticket to vote with, and the display with the most tickets will win this award. This winner will receive a small glass trophy. Frank reminded members that plants on the display table at our meetings should not be touched as the plants may be damaged. NAME BADGE DRAW Names drawn were not present. LUCKY PLANTS - Tony Costa and Sandra, John Costa and Heath Myers. PRESIDENT'S AWARD - Lee Buivids for Angraecum sesquipedale RAFFLE: Robert Cawley (2), Elsie Burriss, Russell Ettrick, Lee Buivis and Richard Dimon. Next meeting: 9 October

4 YOU GREW IT! Paphiopedilum wardii exhibited by Sandra and Tony Named after a British Army Captain, Frank Kingdom Ward, who discovered it in A Natural hybrid between P. sukhakulii and P. venustum. This species Paphiopedilum originates in South-western China and Northern Myanmar growing as a terrestrial in deep leaf litter on limestone cliff faces at elevations of between metres, so it is a cool grower with temperatures around degrees celsius. This orchid has mottled leaves where the top side is a mottled blue / green and the underside is a mottled purple. The inflorescence is about 20cm and carries a single glossy flower. The dorsal sepal is white with green stripes. The petals are broad, green / yellow and are heavily spotted in red / brown with a green flush at the very centre. The petals have fine hairs. The pouch is yellow flushed with brown and distinct reddish veins. Grow this species in light shade in a well-drained mix and grow in humid conditions. It is pollinated by Hoverflies. Can be grown in the Shire in a green house with a protected out look and under a hard roof to protect from cold winter rains. Sandra and Tony grow this towards the Blue Mountains where the temperature ranges vary from 0 to 40 degrees. Cattleya loddigesii exhibited by Sandra and Tony A fantastic species that originates from areas of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. It can be found growing in full sun or heavy shade. It grows as an epiphyte or lithophytes and is classed as a cool or warm grower. The thickish pseudobulbs are about 20 to 30cm in height, so reasonably stocky and has 2 fleshy leaves that are about 10cm long. The inflorescence can vary in length but usually holds the flowers above the foliage. The flower head can vary from 2 to 7 long lived, fragrant flowers. There is a wide variety of colours from a delicate rose / lilac to alba forms to a coerulea (blue). The petals and sepals are similar in shape and colour. The tubular lip is coloured similar to the petals and sepals but is white through the throat or inside. Can be grown in a shade house and doesn t take up a lot of space with a rewarding display of colour. If growing Cattleya they are dissectible to scale and mealy bug, but a regular check and spray can take care of that. 4

5 Restrepia antennifera exhibited by Sandra and Tony Commonly referred to as cockroach orchids, Restrepias are a wonderful small growing orchid that requires very little looking after and if left alone in a small pot will grow into a small specimen plant in a short time. Originating from Venezuela, Columbia and Peru they grow on tree trunks as an epiphyte at elevations of 1600 to 3500 metres, which makes it a cool grower. Restrepia lack pseudobulbs, they only grow to about 10cm in height and have thickish leathery leaves that are elliptical in shape and the plants have fine aerial roots. Flowers come from the base of the leaf on a slender peduncle and can last 1 2 weeks. The long dorsal sepal is erect, slightly triangular at the base and ends with a slight bulbish end at the tip. They have fused lateral sepals and the long slender lateral petals end in a thickened club shaped lip. Colours can vary but are generally a cream / green base colour with brown / maroon spots. There is no definite resting period and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures from around 5 35 degrees and do well in the Shire under shade cloth with bright light just keep the mix damp not soggy. A funny little orchid that is not every bodies cup of tea but are very attractive and have some bright colours with spotted and stripped markings that require little caring for and don t take up much space on the bench. Dendrobium macrophyllum exhibited by Vic Patroski A robust growing latouria species found throughout the islands of Indonesia and the Philippines, New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. Found from hot coastal jungles to cool montane forests from sea level to 1700 meter growing as an epiphyte. The pseudobulbs are ribbed, slightly flattened and thicker towards the top ½ carrying 2 4 leaves towards the top of the pseudobulbs. The inflorescence can be cm in length and carry flowers that are heavily textured and colour variable, they are long lasting (up to a couple of months) and are fragrant. Water and fertilize all year round and grow in similar conditions to Phalaenopsis. Phil Spence from the Central Coast has been doing a lot of work with latouria type orchids to develop orchid types from the hot / warm areas of New Guinea to grow and flower in the cooler Sydney / Newcastle area. Some of the crosses he has developed I have seen flowering at his old Gosford house growing cold with many flowered heads and flowering for 3 4 months. Well worth keeping an eye out for to add to your collection but will be hard to come across for a few years yet. When tidying up your plants and cutting old flowers off the leaf base be careful as the one leaf will continually flower and new flowers are hard to distinguish from spent flower spikes. 5
