7 Preface It is becoming increasingly clear that cell volume regulatory mechanisms are critically involved in the regulation of a wide variety of physiological functions including epithelial transport, neuromuscular excitability, hormone release, metabolism, immune response, migration, cell proliferation and cell death. Moreover, cell volume regulatory mechanisms participate in the pathophysiology of diverse diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, inflammation, uremia, hepatic insufficiency and hypercatabolic states. The present collection of brief reviews from leading scientists in the field is expected to allow deeper insight into mechanisms and significance of cell volume regulatory mechanisms and is hoped to foster further experimental effort in this clinically highly relevant exciting area of research.
