Ardaman & Associates, Inc. Geotechnical, Environmental and Materials Consultants AIM Engineering & Surveying, Inc. Lee Boulevard Lehigh Acres, FL 7 Ardaman Project No. -- -JUN- Attention: Mr. Lee Flynn, P.E. SUBJECT: Subsurface Soil Exploration Drainage Improvements to the Four Corners MSBU Hendry County, Florida Gentlemen: As requested by AIM Engineering & Surveying, Inc. and authorized by Hendry County, Ardaman & Associates, Inc. (Ardaman) has performed the subsurface soil exploration for the project known as Drainage Improvements to the Four Corner MSBU in Hendry County, Florida. This report documents the results of our subsurface field exploration and laboratory testing programs within the Four Corners MSBU study area. This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices for specific application to the study area indicated in this report. No other warranty, expressed or implied, is made. PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND LOCATION The project will include improvements to the existing conveyance ditch from the Four Corners south along the county line between Hendry and Lee to S.R. 78 a distance of approximately, feet. The ditch exists within a -foot swath of land abutting the Hendry/Lee County line. Improvements to the ditch will include widening and deepening as well as two new weir structures. This report summarizes the Subsurface Soil Exploration program for the ditch improvements. Information about the proposed weirs is not included. An aerial photograph of the ditch from S.R. 78 north to the Four Corners is presented as Figure. 7 Bavaria Road, Fort Myers, Florida Phone () 78- FAX () 78- Florida: Bartow, Fort Myers, Miami, Orlando, Port St. Lucie, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Tampa, West Palm Beach Louisiana: Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Monroe, New Orleans, Shreveport

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN- Drainage Improvements to the Four Corners MSBU Project No.-- Hendry County, Florida Page No. SCOPE OF GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES The scope of geotechnical services for the Drainage Improvements to the Four Corners MSBU project was outlined in a proposal to AIM Engineering & Surveying, Inc. dated July,. The key tasks performed for this project are itemized below.. Conducted Standard Penetration Test (T) borings on approximately -foot centers adjacent to the existing drainage ditch to determine the nature of the subsurface soils and groundwater conditions.. Reviewed each soil sample obtained from the test borings in our laboratory for further identification and classification.. Prepared this report to document the results of our field exploration and laboratory testing programs. It is the intent of this report to present general information about subsurface soil and groundwater conditions in the project study area as disclosed by the test borings to the design engineers and to interested bidders on this project. FIELD EXPLORATION PROGRAM A total of T borings were performed. The borings were labeled T- through T-. The T borings were drilled to a depth of feet. The T borings were conducted using methods consistent with ASTM D 8-Standard Method for Penetration Test and Split-Barrel Sampling of Soil. The equipment and procedures used in the T borings are described in detail in the Appendix. The locations of the borings are shown on the attached Figure Boring Location Plan which is a copy of an aerial photo of the study area obtained from the Lee County Property Appraiser s website. The borings were not located horizontally or vertically by survey. GPS coordinates from a hand-held unit are recorded on each boring log. Note that borings T- through T- were accessed from the east side of the ditch in Hendry County through land that is mostly cattle pasture. However, north of boring T-, heavy vegetation precluded further drill rig access requiring the remaining borings T- through T- to be accessed through the orange grove on the west side of the ditch in Lee County. Ardaman & Associates, Inc.

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN- Drainage Improvements to the Four Corners MSBU Project No.-- Hendry County, Florida Page No. LABORATORY TESTING PROGRAM Representative soil samples obtained during our field sampling operation were packaged and transferred to our office and, thereafter, examined by a geotechnical engineer to obtain more accurate descriptions of the existing soil strata. Laboratory testing was performed on selected samples as deemed necessary to aid in soil classification and to further define the engineering properties of the soils. The laboratory tests included Natural Moisture Content, Percent Finer than the U.S. No. Sieve (percent silt and clay) and Sieve Analysis. The test results are presented on the attached soil boring logs at the depths from which the samples were recovered. The results of sieve analysis are presented on Grain-Size Distribution Sheets included in the Appendix. The soil descriptions shown on the logs are based upon visual-manual procedures in accordance with local practice. Soil classification is in general accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D-87) and is also based on visual-manual procedures. SUBSURFACE SOIL/ROCK CHARACTERIZATION The general subsurface soil conditions encountered in the T borings are presented on the attached soil boring logs. Soil stratification is based on visual examination of recovered soil samples and interpretation of the field boring logs. The stratification lines represent the approximate boundaries between the soil types, the actual transitions may be gradual. Because of the large study area, only broad generalities may be stated about subsurface conditions. The reader is encouraged to review the boring logs to become familiar with soil and rock types anticipated in the project area. The following soil and rock strata were identified in the test borings. Ardaman & Associates, Inc.

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN- Drainage Improvements to the Four Corners MSBU Project No.-- Hendry County, Florida Page No. Unified Soil Classification Soil/Rock Description Poorly Graded Sand () fine sand with variable gravel content Poorly Graded Sand with Silt (-SM) slightly silty fine sand with variable gravel content Silty Sand (SM) silty fine sand (typically calcareous) with variable gravel content Silty Clayey Sand (SC-SM) silty clayey fine sand Clayey Sand (SC) clayey fine sand Sandy Silt (ML) fine sandy silt (typically calcareous) Sandy Lean Clay (CL) sandy clay, medium plasticity N/A Soft Weathered Limestone N/A Hard Weathered Limestone Following are typical uses of the soil and rock strata as construction materials. Poorly Graded Sand () Poorly Graded Sand with Silt (-SM) These sands contain less than percent non-plastic silty and may contain up to percent gravel (shell and limerock). Therefore, they are considered Select and suitable for use as structural fill. They are also suitable for use as fill for roadway embankments and subgrades and as general landscaping fill and berms. Drainage or permeability characteristics of these materials are good. Sands excavated below the water table should be stockpiled to drain excess moisture. Ardaman & Associates, Inc.

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration -JUN- Drainage Improvements to the Four Corners MSBU Project No.-- Hendry County, Florida Page No. Silty Sand (SM) Silty Clayey Sand (SC-SM) Clayey Sand (SC) These sands may contain up to percent non-plastic silty or clayey fines. These soils are generally not suitable for reuse as structural fill and as fill for embankments; however, with careful control of the moisture content required compaction may be achieved allowing use of these soil types in roadway embankments or berms. Sandy Silt (ML) Sandy Lean Clay (CL) These sandy silts and sandy clays are generally not suitable for reuse as structural fill due to their high fines content. However, they may be used as embankment fill for roadways if placed at depths of 8 inches or more below the base course and above the water level existing at the time of construction. These materials retain excess moisture and will be very difficult to dry and compact. Drainage or permeability characteristics of these materials are typically very poor because of excessive silty or clayey fines. Soft Weathered Limestone Hard Weathered Limestone Limestone rock is defined as hard if the Standard Penetration Test (T) N-Value is greater than blows for inches or less of penetration. Hard Weathered Limestone was encountered in 8 of the borings at varying depths within the profile. The hardness of the limestone rock will be variable in the project study area with the degree of cementation that occurred in its formation or the degree of weathering that occurred since. Soft Weathered Limestone occurs in the project study area also, which could also be described as a weakly cemented gravelly slightly silty fine sand soil. Boulder-size fragments should be anticipated within the Soft Weathered Limestone. Use of rock as a fill material may require further processing by crushing and sieving to reduce particle sizes to mostly sand and gravel-size. The soil and rock information submitted herein is based on the data obtained from the test borings Ardaman & Associates, Inc.

Report of Subsurface Soil Exploration Drainage Improvements to the Four Corners MSBU Hendry County, Florida -JUN- Project No.-- Page No. presented on the T boring logs included in this report. This report does not reflect any variations that may occur between the borings. The nature and extent of any variation may not become evident until construction. Groundwater levels ranged from about to 8 feet below the existing surface at the time of the field exploration program (/7 /). Please refer to the soil boring logs for the specific groundwater depths on the date of drilling. The groundwater depths shown on the boring logs represent the groundwater surface encountered on the date shown. Fluctuations in groundwater levels should be anticipated throughout the year due to seasonal variations in rainfall and other factors. CLOSURE While the borings are representative of subsurface conditions at their respective locations and for their respectivee vertical reaches, local variations characteristic of the subsurface materials of the region are anticipated and may be encountered. The boring logs and related information are based on the driller's logs and visual examination of selected sample in the laboratory. The delineation between soil types shown on the logs is approximate and the description represents our interpretation of subsurface conditions at the designated boring locations and on the particular date drilled.
