The Current State of the Argo CTD RefDB

15 33 cruises with profiles added Since March 2015 (AST-16 / Brest)

2195 total / 987 from CCHDO Data added to the World Ocean Database Mar 2015 Mar 2016 Criteria: Measurements to at least 2000 m, CTD and/or bottle for years Above all additions below additions through CCHDO (2/3rds of all additions) Other additions: from GTSPP, Line W, Nathan B. Palmer, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, CalCOFI and SADCO (South African Data Centre for Oceanography) Working toward getting routine acquisition of all NOAA CTD data Ease of inclusion of CCHDO data in NCEI archive and WOD (CCHDO API), routine updates. Working with projects (Ocean Observing Initiative), Institutes/Countries (Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, India, China, South Africa)

It takes time, connections and coordination to acquire and prepare CTD data for the RefDB

Sometimes it should be easy Argo Floats

and sometimes it s too easy From: KATSUMATA, Katsuro ( :18:34 GMT) Hello GO-SHIP colleagues, In the Air-Sea flux workshop following the GAIC2015 meeting, I have come across an Indian physical oceanographer Dr. N. Anilkumar from NCAOR ( They have active ongoing hydrographic observation programs in the South Indian Ocean. Anilkumar seems very much interested in the GO-SHIP activities and it might be a good idea to invite him to a next GO-SHIP meeting. Some of their activities are published: B Dr. N. Anilkumar can be contacted at Dr. N. Anilkumar. Group Director, OSSG, NCAOR, Goa anil@ncaor.gov.in The surveys were carried out along two meridional sections, one above the southwest Indian ridge (between 45 E and 48 E) and the other above a relatively flat bottom (57 30 E). The observations were carried out as far south as 67 S to understand the hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry of the ecosystem, and for this the atmospheric, physical, chemical and biological parameters were measured. The observations were mainly concentrated between the subtropical (40 S) and coastal waters of Antarctica. Data and samples were collected during the austral summer (January February) onboard ORV Sagar Kanya in 2004, Akademic Boris Petrov (ABP) in 2006 and 2009 and ORV Sagar Nidhi, in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (Since most of the studies included in this issue are based on the expeditions from 2009 to 2013, the details of the expeditions carried out in 2004 and 2006 are not included in this editorial). The multidisciplinary station locations pertinent to the publications included in this issue are portrayed in Fig. 1. In the entire cruise track the depth of the ocean varied between 100 and 5900 m, depending on the bottom topography due to the Southwest Indian ridge and Crozet plateau.

Tell me about ship CTD from your country

SECTION 6: To continue improving the number of CTD cruise data being added to the reference database by Argo PIs, it is requested that you include the number and location of CTD cruise data uploaded by PIs within your country to the CCHDO website in the past year. These cruises could be used for Argo calibration purposes only or could be cruises that are open to the public as well.

Looking to the Future

New Procedures for non GO-SHIP Data (fast delivery) No more automatic flagging of CTD data (WOCE flag 2) Detailed data reports (or presentations) at AST & ADMT Report on data quality for each dataset from J. Swift,H. Freeland and B. Owens (incl. oxygen?) It is expected that some data will take extra resources to process (time, personnel, etc.)

The CCHDO API (v2.0 coming soon) curl --get -H "X-Authentication-Token: XXXXXX691432" --data-urlencode 'filters=[{"path":"data_type", "op":"eq", "value":"ctd"}, {"path":"data_format", "op":"eq", "value":"whp_netcdf"}]'

Our Retirees are working Overtime J. Swift & H. Freeland I have carried out a basic examination of the data in CTD data file ctd_10857_nc_ctd.zip, which you sent to me for this purpose. The file opened without problem. The cruise data are from December The stations are located between Madagascar and the African continent. There are no geographically-coincident CCHDO data, but WOCE/CLIVAR line I04W lies not to distant to the south. The data consist of combined down and up CTD casts, with a maximum pressure of 1000 db. There are down versus up cast differences, probably arising from the usual causes, such as entrained water, and possibly not-fully-corrected temperature/conductivity lag time differences. It is recommended that a special file be made with only the down cast data. The data are not excessively noisy and in general seem to be OK, though perhaps not processed (for noise, spike, etc.) to the degree expected for GO- SHIP data. There were no bottle data with the CTD data, so it is not possible to estimate the goodness of fit for the salinity and oxygen data. There are no data from deep or abyssal waters to check the reasonableness of the CTD temperature, salinity, and oxygen data compared to presumed smaller temporal variability in those layers. Comparisons of the 2008 data with the 2003 Japanese I04W simply show differences, but not alarming ones. There was an apparent eddy crossed at station 1239 (and neighboring stations). Jim Swift Research Oceanographer, SIO

On Schedule / Under No Budget ORIGINAL TIMELINE (from AST-16/March 2015): May 1, 2015: Christine and Thierry begin testing API July 1, 2015: Full implementation of API on main CCHDO site Continue to find cruises and provide CTD data to Coriolis November ADMT-16: First Report March AST-17: Updated Report

WHAT ABOUT DEEP ARGO?

Are there enough data?

Announcing GO-SHIP Associated The Executive and General Committee Meeting in September 2015 decided to introduce a new classification. GO-SHIP ASSOCIATED: Repeat hydrographic sections off regular GO- SHIP lines and not necessarily coast-to-coast or coast-to-ice, that: deliver high quality data, establish full depth stations below 2000m at least every 240nm, are repeated on decadal frequency or more, with at least once per decade sufficient level 1 parameters to determine decadal changes in inorganic carbon and heat, at a minimum resolution of 60nm, and comply with the data policy.

Thanks!

The Value of Information The Paradigm Shift Information is only of value if you give it to people who have the ability to do something with it. Knowledge is power Stanley McChyrstal Sharing is power!
