2 11/09/2012 Version 1 UNOSAT Activation: FL SEN Satellite assessment of floods in Dakar, Senegal as of 31 August 2012 PREFACE: This report provides a detailed analysis of the flood event in Senegal as of 31 August WorldView 2 Satellite imagery acquired on 31 August 2012 and compared with archive imagery from 20 September 2010 was used for this report. This report is part of an on-going satellite monitoring by UNITAR / UNOSAT through the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters activation over floods in Senegal, in support of international humanitarian assistance. ANALYSIS SUMMARY: The International Charter Space and Major Disasters was activated on 27 August 2012 for flooding in Dakar Region, Senegal. Dakar Region encompasses the capital city of Dakar and its suburbs. An assessment of the situation is done using best available optical imagery, WorldView 2 from 31 August Most of the flood water has already withdrawn, however the images show remaining waters next to the Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport and flooded neighbourhoods in the Pikine Department. The overpopulated and informal suburban areas in the Pikine Department are faced with recurrent flooding issues due to dysfunctional rain and dirty water evacuation and ascending ground water. This results in seasonal or practically permanent water pools in the city, sometimes difficult to distinguish from flood waters originating from this particular flood event. SITE 1.
