1 ` KENYA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT DEKADAL AGROMETEOROLOGICAL BULLETIN WEATHER AND CROP REVIEW FOR DEKAD 32, 11 TH 20 TH NOVEMBER, 2017 HIGHLIGHTS ON RAINFALL AND TEMPERATURE Rainfall activities decreased drastically both in intensity and spatial distribution countrywide. Eastern region continued to report the highest rainfall countrywide, with Meru, Mwea, Kitui and Embu stations recording 146.3, 140.7, and 88.1mm of rainfall respectively; compared to 317.6mm reported at Meru station in the same region in the previous dekad. Thika station in Central region received the highest rainfall amount of 71.2mm. North-Eastern region received the highest rainfall amount of 62.0mm at Moyale station. JKIA station in Nairobi region recorded the highest rainfall amount of 34.2mm. Mtwapa station in Coastal region reported the highest rainfall amount of 27.2mm. Rift Valley region recorded the highest rainfall amount of 18.0mm at Kericho station. Kisumu station in Nyanza region received 17.8mm of rainfall; while Matungu station in Western region reported the highest rainfall amount of 11.2mm. Maximum temperatures increased drastically, while Minimum temperatures remained on a decreasing trend. Garissa and Lodwar stations in North-Eastern region, recorded the highest Maximum temperature of 34.9 C compared to 34.4 C reported at Garissa station in the same in the previous dekad. Nyahururu station in Central region continued to record the lowest Minimum temperature of 10.1 C. For a more comprehensive summary of rainfall and other meteorological parameters, see Figures 3.1 to 3.4 as shown below. CROP AND WEATHER REVIEW FOR DEKAD 32, 11 TH 20 TH NOVEMBER, NYANZA AND WESTERN REGIONS Kakamega Total rainfall amount reported was 5.5mm. The Mean air temperature recorded was 21.8ᵒC. Sunshine duration was 7.7hrs/day. There was no report on total pan evaporation. Beans were in harvesting stage and in good state hence normal yield is expected. Maize was in flowering stage and in fair state Kisii The station recorded total rainfall amount of 8.0mm. The Mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were 20.1ᵒC and 28.5mm respectively. There was no report on sunshine duration. Maize and Beans were at flowering and maturity stages respectively; both crops were in good state, hence above normal yield is expected. 1
2 2.2 RIFT VALLEY REGION Kitale. The station recorded total rainfall amount of 3.0mm. The Mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were 18.8ᵒC and 38.0mm respectively. Sunshine hours reported was 8.0hrs/day. Farmers are still busy drying there maize crop Eldoret - Kapsoya The station reported total rainfall amount of 9.2mm. The Mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were 16.8ᵒC and 50.7mm respectively. There was no report on Sunshine parameter. Farmers are still busy drying there maize. 2.3 CENTRAL KENYA HIGHLANDS AND NAIROBI AREA REGION Nyeri The station reported 30.4mm of rainfall. The Mean air temperature recorded was C. Sunshine duration was 6.4hrs/day. There was no report on total Pan Evaporation. Maize and Beans and are in emergence stage and in fair state Kabete The station recorded 25.0mm of rainfall. Total Pan Evaporation recorded was 31.4mm. Sunshine duration recorded was 6.7hrs/day. There was no report on mean air Temperature. Maize and beans are at emergence and in fair state; the crops are doing well Nyahururu The station received 5.4mm of rainfall. The mean air Temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were C and 33.9mm respectively. No report on Sunshine parameter. Maize was still at flowering stage and in good condition, hence normal yield is expected Dagoretti The station reported 21.2mm of rainfall. The Mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation reported were 18.7 C and 36.1mm respectively. Sunshine hours reported was 5.9hrs/day. No Phenological report Thika The station reported 71.2 mm of rainfall. Total pan evaporation recorded was 30.2mm. There was no report on Mean air temperature and Sunshine duration. Maize, Beans and Potatoes are still at emergence state and in fair state. 2
3 2.4 EASTERN REGION Embu The station received 88.1mm of rainfall. Sunshine duration reported was 6.0hrs/day. There was no report on Mean Air Temperature and total Pan Evaporation. Maize and beans are at emergence and in fair state Meru The station received 146.3mm of rainfall. The mean air Temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were C and 42.8mm. Sunshine duration reported was 6.1 hrs per day. Maize and beans are at emergence and in fair state Katumani (Machakos) The station recorded 71.0mm of rainfall. The mean air Temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were C and 45.3mm respectively. There was no report on Sunshine duration. Maize and beans are in emergence and in fair state. 2.5 COASTAL REGION Msabaha The station received 5.7mm of rainfall. Total Pan Evaporation recorded was 43.2mm. There was no report on mean air Temperature, and Sunshine parameters. Maize is at emergence and in fair state Mtwapa The station recorded rainfall amount of 27.2mm. The mean air Temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were 26.4 C and 48.7mm respectively. Sunshine duration was 6.1hrs/day. Maize is at emergence stage and in fair state. Mangoes are in dormant stage Lamu The station reported 1.4mm of rainfall. The Mean air temperature recorded was 28.8 C. Sunshine duration was 9.5hrs/day. There was no report on total Pan Evaporation. Cashew nuts are in maturity stage and in fair state. 3

6 EXPECTED WEATHER AND CROP CONDITIONS DURING THE NEXT 10 DAYS; 21 ST to 30 TH NOVEMBER Counties within the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands west of the Rift Valley, (Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Uasin-Gishu, Nakuru, Narok, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Kajiado, Vihiga and Busia), Mornings are expected to experience sunny intervals on the first two days; followed by rains over few places for the rest of the forecast period. Afternoons are expected to experience showers and thunderstorms over few places for the first two days, increasing to several throughout the rest of the forecast period. The showers will be beneficial to the maize and beans in flowering and maturity stages in places like Kisii and Kakamega. The Northwestern counties (Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu), Mornings are expected to experience sunny intervals for the first four days of the forecast period followed by rains over few places thereafter. Afternoons are expected to experience mainly sunny intervals except on the 7 th day of the forecast period when showers and thunderstorms over few places will be realized. The showers will continue to benefit the vegetation and the pasture for the animals kept in this region. The Central highlands including Nairobi area (counties of Meru, Murang a, Kiambu, Nyeri, Nairobi, Embu, Nyandarua, Tharaka and Kirinyaga), are expected to experience cloudy mornings with rains over few places, giving way to sunny intervals throughout the forecast period. Afternoons are expected to experience showers over few places for the first 6 days of the forecast period, increasing to several thereafter. The showers will continue to benefit the crops that are in emergence and flowering stages in places like Nyeri, Thika, Kabete, Embu, Meru and Nyahururu, Northeastern counties (counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo), are expected to experience sunny intervals for the 1 st 3 days, followed by rains over few places thereafter. Afternoons are expected to experience sunny intervals for the 1 st 6 days, followed by showers over few places, increasing to several thereafter. The showers will replenish the vegetation and pasture in these regions. Southeastern lowlands (counties of Taita Taveta, Makueni, Machakos and Kitui) mornings are expected to experience mainly sunny intervals for the much of the forecast period. Afternoons are expected to experience mainly showers over few places throughout the forecast period. The showers will have a positive impact on the vegetation and pasture for the animals kept in this region. In the Coastal strip (counties of Mombasa, Malindi, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, etc) showers over few places are expected for the 1 st 4 days, increasing to several thereafter the entire day throughout the forecast period. The showers will benefit the cashew nuts that are in flowering stage in Lamu and impact positively on the maize at emergence in Msabaha and Mtwapa. 6
