1 KENYA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT DEKADAL AGROMETEOROLOGICAL BULLETIN WEATHER AND CROP REVIEW FOR DEKAD 4,1 ST 10 TH FEBRUARY, HIGHLIGHTS ON RAINFALL AND TEMPERATURE Rainfall activities have decreased both in intensity and in spatial distribution. Nyanza region continued to record the highest rainfall amount of 33.6mm at Kisii station compared to 67.0mm received at Kisumu station in the same region in the last dekad. Rift valley region reported the highest rainfall amount of 25.5mm at Kericho station. Nyeri station in Central region recorded the highest rainfall amount of 14.6mm. Eastern region received the highest rainfall amount of 13.2mm at Meru station. Kitale station in Western region recorded the highest rainfall amount of 7.2mm. Nairobi region received the highest rainfall amount of 2.8mm at Wilson Airport station; Wajir station in the North Eastern region reported the highest rainfall amount of 1.9mm while the Coastal region reported the highest rainfall amount of1.6mm in Msabaha station. Maximum temperatures decreased while Minimum temperatures increased in the last dekad. Wajir station in North Eastern region reported the highest Maximum temperature of C. The lowest minimum Temperature of C was recorded at Nyahururu station in Central region compared to C reported at the same station in the last dekad. For a more comprehensive summary of rainfall and other meteorological parameters, see Figures 3.1 to 3.4 as shown below. 2. CROP AND WEATHER REVIEW FOR DEKAD 4, 1 st to 10 TH FEBRUARY, NYANZA AND WESTERN REGIONS Kakamega Total rainfall recorded was 0.02mm. Total Pan Evaporation was 52.0mm. There was no report on mean air temperature. Land preparation is underway Kisii The station recorded total rainfall amount of 33.6 mm. The mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were 22.6ᵒC and 48.0mm respectively. Land preparation is underway. 1

2 2.2 RIFT VALLEY REGION Kitale. The station recorded total rainfall of 7.22mm. Total Pan Evaporation reported was 49.7 mm. There was no report on mean air temperature. No phenological report Eldoret - Kapsoya The station reported dry conditions. The mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation were 19.0 C and 75.8mm respectively. No phenological report. 2.3 CENTRAL KENYA HIGHLANDS AND NAIROBI AREA REGION Nyeri Total amount of rainfall recorded was 14.6mm. The mean air temperature reported was C. There was no report on total Pan Evaporation. Both maize and beans have been destroyed by prolonged drought beyond recovery and hence no harvest is expected Kabete The station recorded total rainfall of 0.01mm. Total Pan Evaporation was 65.5mm. There was no report on mean air temperature. No phenological report Thika The station continued to report dry conditions. The average air temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were 21.0ᵒC and 61.0mm respectively. Maize is in maturity stage and in failure state due to prolonged sunny conditions; hence below normal yield is expected. Beans and Potatoes have been harvested Nyahururu The station recorded 11.6mm of rainfall. The mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation recorded were C and 66.6mm respectively. No phenological report Dagoretti The station recorded dry conditions. Total pan evaporation was 71.5mm and there was no report on Mean air temperature. No Phenological report. 2

3 2.4 EASTERN KENYA REGION Embu The station continued to report dry conditions. Total Pan Evaporation reported was 64.0mm. There was no report on Mean air temperature Maize is at flowering stage and in poor state due to insufficient rain, hence below normal yield is expected. Beans have been harvested Meru The station recorded total rainfall of 13.2mm. Mean Air Temperature and total Pan Evaporation was C and 43.7mm respectively. Maize is at flowering stage and in failure state due to insufficient rain. Beans were at flowering stage and in poor state, hence below normal yield are expected Katumani (Machakos) The station recorded dry conditions. The mean air temperature and total Pan Evaporation reported were C and 83.0mm respectively. The Maize crop is wilting due to the prolonged sunny conditions 2.5 COASTAL REGION Msabaha Total amount of rainfall received was 1.6mm. Total Pan Evaporation reported was 43.1mm. There was no report on mean air Temperature. Maize crop that was in a few farms have dried up due to the prevailing dry conditions. Mangoes were being harvested Mtwapa The station continued to report dry conditions. The Mean air temperature and total pan evaporation reported were C and 68.5mm respectively. Mangoes were at harvest stage and in fair state. 3

EXPECTED WEATHER AND CROP CONDITIONS DURING THE NEXT 10 DAYS; 11 TH to 20 TH February Counties within the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands west of the Rift Valley, (Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Uasin-Gishu, Nakuru, Narok, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Kajiado, Vihiga and Busia), are expected to experience mainly sunny intervals in the morning throughout the forecast period. Afternoons are expected to experience showers and thunderstorms over few places throughout the forecast period except on the 5 th and the 6 th days when afternoons are expected to remain dry. The showers will benefit the vegetation and pasture in these regions. The Northwestern counties (Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu), are expected to experience sunny intervals the entire day throughout the forecast period. The dry conditions will have a negative effect on the pasture for the animals kept in these regions. The Central highlands including Nairobi area (counties of Meru, Murang a, Kiambu, Nyeri, Nairobi, Embu, Nyandarua, Tharaka and Kirinyaga), are expected to experience sunny intervals in the morning throughout the forecast period. Afternoons are expected to experience showers over few places from the 6th day to the end of the forecast period. The Showers will be of advantage to the vegetation and pasture for the animals kept in these regions. Northeastern counties (counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo), are expected to experience morning rains from the 4 th day to the end of the forecast period. Afternoons are expected to have sunny intervals throughout the forecast period The Showers and the rains will have positive impact on the pasture for the animals kept in the region. Southeastern lowlands (counties of Taita Taveta, Makueni, Machakos and Kitui) are expected to experience sunny intervals in the morning and afternoon showers over few places from the 6 th day to the end of the forecast period. The showers will benefit the vegetation and pasture for the animals kept in these areas. In the Coastal strip (counties of Mombasa, Malindi, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, etc) are expected to experience morning showers over few places and sunny intervals in the afternoon throughout the forecast period. The showers will be of great advantage to the pasture and vegetation for the animals in this region. 6
