1 FINALLY - A NEWSLETTER!!! The sometimes author of the Association newsletter has finally returned to the keyboard. While excuses can be tiresome, I owe a bit of explanation: In the course of a 6 months beginning in May: My laptop hard drive stopped recording and worse, retrieving records. The Western Digital backup drive refused to regurgitate its many gigabytes of treasured records (no backup to the backup). My next plan to resurrect PC functionality on my old mini-tower failed along with the tower power supply. A new top-line laptop came with new software that was inscrutable to me, incompatible with my (old) data, and a keyboard that was two thirds the size of my hands and therefore unusable Returning to the original drive-free laptop, it was given a new solid-state hard drive (insanely fast). Then began the manual retrieval of gigabytes of documents from the most unusual of sources. I now have more than one catastrophic backup system. Hopefully they provide sufficient redundancy that we ll never again have such a period. Then there were the usual birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, knee replacements and so on. Anyway, I hope to more reliably offer a newsletter. Violent Local Weather (2014) Some Information From 2014 Our area was hit by violent weather on Friday evening, April 25 th, F1, F2, and perhaps one F3 tornadoes were confirmed hitting a corridor from Edenton through Elizabeth City. Both Heritage Shores communities seem to have avoided any structural damage or personal injury. Many of the above-ground utility lines on Poor Hill Road near the entrances to Heritage Shores were brought down when over a dozen mature trees fell on them. Heritage Shores was left without utility power for about 48 hours. Area winds were generally storm strength and erratic, bringing down or damaging structures. We were very lucky. Close to Heritage Shores, many homes and several cars were damaged or destroyed in Bethel community (fishing center). Toward Edenton on Burnt Mill Road there were several homes obliterated and vehicles damaged or destroyed. (pictures follow) The one death in our area was a young baby killed when a home on Yeopim Road was crushed.

2 Also, multiple homes were severely damaged or destroyed in the residential area to the northeast of the US 17/Okisko Road interchange nearing Elizabeth City. On Chapanoke Road, more structures and trees were badly damaged. Along the paths, hundreds of trees were downed in the forested areas with many falling on structures and vehicles. The falling trees also took down miles of utility lines and poles in this area. Emergency Services Jarvis Winslow and the County Emergency Management team were active immediately, as was medical support. NCDOT and Emergency Management were quick to clear street blockages. Areas with exposed or downed power lines were blocked off, as were areas with severe damage. NCDOT crews cleared the blockages in Poor Hill drainage, and also removed some fallen trees at the entrance to our communities. The Albemarle Electric Coop did an amazing job quickly replacing poles and wiring and restoring our electricity. Cleanup Kathy and Bill Andrews, Bob Bastek, Jean Oaks, and John Pohjola piled the broken branches and storm debris along the pavement edges and shoulders at the community entrance area. The following day Kathy Andrews, Mike Hardison, Gary Jordan, and John McCormack loaded trailers and took the piles to the County recycling center. The County centers were helpfully accommodating the flood of storm debris even as their dumpsters and containers were over-full. * * * O O O * * * Roads Some Information From 2015 Over the past months, the roads committee challenge was to present a plan (with likely funding needs) to hire a company(s) to bring failing portions of the association roads into good repair. Also, the committee was to identify and recommend a company that would seal the cracks in our roads. These two actions should prevent or delay further deterioration, and dramatically improve the appearance and serviceability of roads i.e., Adams, Lincoln, and Johnson. The road committee has now reached a stage in their supplier research and planning that contracts can be let and work begun. For example, we hope that crack repair can begin in April.

3 Logging Over the past 12 months or so, two large tracts at the community end of Poor Hill Road were clear cut. One area is roughly bordered by Heritage Shores North and Poor Hill road. It generally forms a 26 acre square in an easterly and northerly direction. The second area is a similar size and shape, and borders Poor Hill Road from the Heritage Shores North entrance in an approximate square to the east and south. The logging company that worked both these plots did a remarkable job in leaving the area cleaned up with no slash piles or other debris. The company had an industrial chipper to remove almost all trimmings. Poor Hill Road was undamaged. A third and fourth area at the east and south corner of Poor Hill Road was also maintained. One area was replanted with pines three or so years ago. The nonpine undergrowth was cut, and the young pines trimmed. Adjacent to that plot and continuing in past the entrance to Heritage Shores South, a fourth area of mostly mature trees was thinned. The cut trees were removed, and the underbrush cut down. This looks especially good with clear sight lines throughout, lots of mature pines remaining, and the deadfalls and other ground debris removed Annual Meeting The association annual meeting was held on March 14, Attendees discussed and voted on a number of issues. These included the repair of roads, recognizing that state takeover of our remaining roads would be some years into the future. For state to assume the remainder of our roads, our resident population will have to be over forty-four homes to meet the state requirement for population density on state roads. Minutes for the entire meeting have been published. A contractor has been retained and is currently treating the various cracks and other similar damage on all association roads. Information and Assistance Patricia s Grille The former Beautiful Moon Café on the Hobbs Beech Tree Inn grounds on Pender was closed last year. The facility recently opened as Patricia s Grille with new staff and a "Country French" cuisine theme. The menu and quality of the food seems more upscale. The chef has returned from Europe to our area. Information on the hours of operation and the menu/offerings can be found at: Our visits for dinner and Sunday brunch have been most pleasant.

4 Perry s Tree Service At home we recently had a good experience with Perry s Tree Service. The days of strong winds meant we had a number of branches break off. Some fell cleanly, and others were left dangling and were a hazard. In a short time one morning, the damaged limbs were cleaned from the trees, weakened limbs trimmed, debris neatly piled up where requested. We also had an oversized Crepe Myrtle taken down and piled. And it was over! Fast, easy, decent price, and done. The sort of thing that is most convenient and helpful.
