2 HOW PALM HARBOR HOMES SURVIVED HURRICANE ANDREW. Hurricane Andrew was truly a monstrous storm. Blasting South Florida with gusts of more than 175 miles an hour and spawning tornadoes of even greater ferocity, it left a path of indescribable destruction. Andrew s full force hit Gateway West community in Florida City, leaving the 124-lot neighborhood in ruins. But there were a few exceptions. Of the community s ten Palm Harbor homes, eight came through with damage no more serious than broken windows and lost shingles and lap siding. The shingles and siding came loose when additions, such I was very unhappy with the way my (national brand) fell apart in the storm. Since the Palm Harbors in our community survived unbelievably well, my replacement home will be a Palm Harbor. Bill Mallette as aluminum carports and Florida rooms were torn away. The ninth home s sidewall was partially collapsed by a neighbor s flying refrigerator, and the tenth was destroyed by a direct tornado hit. No other manufactured homes weathered the storm as well. And, while we re thankful that such disasters are rare, we are also proud that our homeowners had this extra measure of security. As one resident put it, Look around our community. It s obvious there is no comparison between Palm Harbor and the other homes.

Amajor natural disaster is the supreme test of a manufactured home s quality, and many of the homes destroyed by Hurricane Andrew were built before HUD regulations toughened the requirements for such construction. But no government agency or other manufacturer, for that matter has ever adopted standards as I would not own any other brand home than Palm Harbor. Some 85,000 residences including individual homes, condominiums and apartments had to be replaced. Only 4,500 of these were manufactured homes. How badly was the Gateway West community damaged? Located in South Dade County, the neighborhood I can t believe how well the Palm Harbor homes in Gateway West survived Hurricane Andrew while my (national brand) was completely destroyed. That s why I bought a Palm Harbor. Evelyn Wrasse was at ground zero and was virtually flattened. (Bear in mind that the storm and its tornadoes were powerful enough to collapse reinforced concrete bunkers at nearby Homestead Air Force Base.) Why did Palm Harbor homes weather the storm so well? In a nutshell, they re better built.

4 August 2004 Hurricane Charley Palm Harbor home Competing Brand CHARLEY WAS THE SECOND -WORST HURRICANE IN U.S. HISTORY. - Insurance Information Institute Hurricane Charley: Its worst brings out Palm Harbor s best! Hurricane Charley Press Reports - August 13, 2004 With nearly 2 million tourists and residents evacuated along Florida s west coast, Hurricane Charley made landfall in Punta Gorda at 3:45pm. Maximum sustained winds were 145 mph with gusts even higher. Hurricane force winds extended outward up to 25 miles from the center, tropical storm force winds extended up to 85 miles and feeder bands extended up to 225 miles. Hurricane Charley was an equal opportunity offender. Commercial buildings, site-built and manufactured homes all felt Charley s wrath. In Punta Gorda, just two days after the storm, Federal Emergency Management Agency director Michael Brown said that 11,000 people had already applied for disaster aid. On August 16, 2004, USA Today reported that authorities estimated Charley caused as much as $11 billion in damage. Yet, with all this devastation, success stories about the incredible survival rate of Palm Harbor homes began circulating as homeowners directly in Charley s path happily shared their experiences of returning to undamaged Palm Harbor homes standing in the midst of Charley s total destruction. Norm and Betty Bunn When we returned to our community after Hurricane Charley, we were pleasantly surprised. Even though our community was devastated, our Palm Harbor home withstood the hurricane and is in perfect shape. It was just a delight. The neighbors came by and said, What did you do right? We told them, I think we chose the right home... a Palm Harbor home.

5 Tom and Carol Trakas Before we purchased our Palm Harbor home we conducted a little research. It seemed to be better built than the competition. It was supposed to withstand 130 mph winds, but it withstood far more than that. I just can t say enough good things about our home, how it was built and how it reacted to Hurricane Charley. We are proud that every Palm Harbor home built to the tough wind code standard stood up to the hurricanes. Every one! Bob and Carol Clements Our Palm Harbor Wellington model went through Hurricane Charley with winds of about 160 mph and the house stood up beautifully. It s solid, beautiful construction, and even better than they said it would be. Richard and Judy Selle A Palm Harbor home is the top of the line in manufactured homes. They pay particular attention to any part of the structure that might be damaged in a storm. I would definitely invest in another Palm Harbor home. They came out after the storm and investigated some of their engineering and said they re going to go back and make them even better. So the fact that the home stood up and is going to be better yet, I guess Palm Harbor is the only home to buy. Bill and Joan Cox We were in Budapest when our Palm Harbor home was hit by Hurricane Charley. When we got back we found our home in fine shape. We re living just like we did before we left. We have friends that bought a home in Punta Gorda Isles. It s a cement block stucco site-built home and they sustained quite a bit of damage. They told me just a day or so ago that they wished they would ve purchased a home here. Unfortunately they didn t do so.
