Withstanding Hurricane Ivan As Ivan reached landfall in the United States, it was reported as a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds resulting in billions of dollars in damage to the East coast. 13 Oakland Firestorm of 1991 On October 20, 1991, with wind gusts up to 65 mph, a brush fire quickly spread throughout the Berkeley Hills of Oakland, California. The fire spread burning embers from house to house devastating nearly 2,900 single family dwellings. This image shows a lone Gerard home that survived one of the worst fires in California history. EF3 Arkansas Tornado On April 9, 2009, a tornado warning had been extended into Polk County, Arkansas. Minutes later, the tornado struck the city leaving over 600 homes damaged or destroyed.
