Flood risk management Introduction Risk management in 20th century The Dutch Delta Works Risk management in the 21st century Climate change and sea level rising Local action: strengthening the weak links in the coastal defense chain Conclusions and dilemma s Local action France Discussion with expert panel

The 21 st century Sea level rise (m)

The 21 st century We had to start dealing with water differently, taking into account possible developments, some of them far in the future It would be a case of: less fighting against the water more moving with water

The 21 st century

Weak links The 21 st century Weak links: points at which our coastal defences would no longer meet legal requirements within a couple of decades.

The 21 st century The coast is more than just a line of defence. It s also a place for living recreation industry nature

The 21 st century Coastal functions Defense Nature Recreation Tourism Industry Living Weak link approach Future developments Climate change Sea level rise Local action: integrated approach to fix the weak links

The 21 st century Presentation of local action Weak Links: The Dutch approach to strengthening coastal defences in an integrated and long term way Strengthening solutions: guarantee safety for at least 50 years and improve quality of the coastal region

The 21 st century 1. Weak link Scheveningen a promenade current situation

The 21 st century 1. Weak link Scheveningen a promenade design for solution

The 21 st century 2. Weak link Zeeuws Vlaanderen a dune coast current situation

The 21 st century 2. Weak link Zeeuws Vlaanderen a dune coast design for solution

The 21 st century 3. Weak Link Hondsbossche en Pettemer seawall a dyke current situation

The 21 st century 3. Weak Link Hondsbossche en Pettemer seawall Allowing the water to occasionally overtop the dyke

The 21st century 3. Weak Link Hondsbossche en Pettemer seawall or with a Marina

The 21 st century All nine weak links will be strengthened within the next five years. This will guarantee our safety for the next 50 years. But in the meantime, the world will not be standing still. So we are already thinking about solutions beyond that period.

The 21 st century The solution for tomorrow? Artificial reefs

or sediment enforcements The 21 st century

Flood risk management Introduction Risk management in the 20th century The Dutch answer to the flooding disaster of 1953 Risk management in the 21st century Climate change and sea level rising Local action: strengthening the weak links in the coastal defence chain Conclusions and dilemma s Local action France Discussion with expert panel

We keep one of the world s most populated deltas safe to live and invest in! Conclusions

Statements 1. Safety measures in coastal areas should be both climate proof as well as integrated with its environment. The Dutch way to fix the weak links in the coastal defence chain is an excellent example of this integrated coastal zone management. 2. Too much focussing on protection could create blind spots elsewhere in the risk management chain.
