11. Shake It Out 12/06/2016 EQOD : How do citizens determine the best thing to do in an emergency? Initial Thoughts: In a Level 0 Silence Voice, take 5 minutes to answer the question. If you still have time, update your Table of Contents and your Big Ideas Section.
Initial Thoughts! 1. In a Level 2 Partner Voice, take 5 minutes to share your Initial Thoughts! 2. When I call your name, use a Level 3 Presentation Voice to share your Initial Thoughts. No wrong answers!
Evidence I: Earthquakes In order to talk about how to be safe from Earthquakes first we need to understand what they are and how they work. Earthquakes:A sudden shaking of the of the ground caused by movements of the Earth s crust or volcanic action Quick Video: Dr.Binocs Show!
Quick Review Check! In a Level 0 Silence voice, go back for a minute and find your answer to the following question in the lesson Moving Plates What causes the Earth s crust to move? Hint: It has to do with the mantle: Answer:
Evidence I: Earthquakes Earthquakes occur when rock underground suddenly breaks along a plate boundary. This creates a sudden release in energy that makes the ground shake. This energy is known as Seismic Waves, which is energy released from the Earth during an Earthquake. The waves travel in different directions and causes the ground, and everything on top, to shake and move.
Evidence II: Fact about Earthquakes Moving during an Earthquake puts you at risk!: Earthquakes occur without warning and may be so violent that you cannot run or crawl; you therefore will most likely be knocked to the ground where you happen to be. From this evidence, what is one thing you should do during an Earthquake? (Use the following sentence starter and take 2 minutes to answer the question above in a Level 0 silence voice) During an Earthquake you should... What about if you re driving?
Evidence II: Facts about Earthquakes Building collapse is less of a danger: While images of collapsed structures in earthquakes around the world are frightening and get the most attention from the media, most buildings do not collapse at all, and few completely fall down. In California, strict building codes have worked to greatly reduce the potential of structure collapse. From this evidence, what is another thing you should do during an earthquake? (Use the following sentence starter and take 2 minutes to answer the question above in a Level 0 silence voice) During an Earthquake you also should...
Evidence II: Facts about Earthquakes The greatest danger is from falling and flying objects Studies of injuries and deaths caused by Earthquakes over the last several decades show that you are much more likely to be injured by falling or flying objects (TVs, lamps, glass, bookcases, etc.) than to die in a collapsed building. From this evidence, what is one last thing you should do during an earthquake? (Use the following sentence starter and take 2 minutes to answer the question above in a Level 0 silence voice) Lastly, during an Earthquake you should...
Review Earthquake Facts! Take 5 minutes to discuss with your partner the answer to the following questions in a Level 2 Partner Voice. We will then discuss as a class How does an Earthquake occur? What is the energy released during an Earthquake? What should you do if you re moving during an Earthquake? Should you worry about a building collapsing? Why or why not? What is the greatest danger during an Earthquake?
Evidence III: Design Solutions Design Solutions: The creation of a plan or system that is put in place in case of a specific event or problem. Example: Earthquake Drills and Evacuation. What should you do during an Earthquake drill vs. a Disaster Drill? Not all solutions are perfect! There may be some trade-offs, or compromises, to make the solution work. Why do you think CA invests in these design solutions?
Evidence III: Design Solutions One example of a design solution: Experts recommend that during an Earthquake you should stand under the doorway. However, some modern houses are made of concrete and not adobe or wood. Therefore, the doorways are no stronger than any other part of the house, and the doorway does not protect you from falling or flying objects. What are the trade-offs to this solutions? (Use the sentence starter) One trade-off to the doorway solution is that...
Evidence III: Design Solutions Another example of a design solution: Experts recommend creating a triangle of life so objects don t fall direction on top of you. However, you can t predict how a building will collapse or IF it will collapse. Also, not being under an object may put you at risk of a falling or flying object. What are the trade-offs to this solutions? (Use the sentence starter) One trade-off to the Triangle of Life solution is that...
Evidence III: Design Solutions Lastly What are the trade-offs to this solutions? (Use the sentence starter) One trade-off to the Drop! Cover! Hold solution is that...
Last Little Review... We will 2 minutes to discuss the answers to the following questions with our partners in a Level 2 Partner Voice. Then I will pick people to answer the questions in a Level 3 Partner Voice What are Design Solutions? Give Examples Does CA invests in Design Solution? Why or why not? What are the 3 types of Design Solutions we learned about in this lesson? Give me one trade off for each Design Solution
Analysis Work in a Level 2 Partner Voice for 15 min Trace (to outline) the evidence that is used to support the claim that during an Earthquake we should drop, cover and hold. Explain why California invests a lot of time and energy into the public knowing about this safety design solution Predict how this design solution may not be the best solution to staying safe during an Earthquake in another country.
Reflection Create a tri-fold brochure that explains to people what to do when driving during an earthquake. Work with a partner
Summary, Big Idea and Vocab Take 7 minutes to work in a level 0 silence voice on your summary. EQOD: How do citizens determine the best thing to do in an emergency? Big Idea: New Vocabulary Terms: Must update on your own in the back of your journal along with a definition and a picture. Earthquakes, Seismic Waves, Design Solutions
