Over the ages, mankind lived through many misconceptions.

Mayans and others believed they needed to sacrifice a maiden to the gods in exchange for water for their crops.

Mayans and others believed they needed to sacrifice a maiden to the gods in exchange for water for their crops.

Beijing believed they needed to sacrifice their clear blue skies for commerce. The sky turned blue again after a heavy rain on Monday night cleaned off the filthy air that had choked Beijingers since last Friday. Beijing saw another heavily polluted day on Monday with visibility descending to only 500 meters. Note: the gray box is NOT EMPTY -- it is the same exact neighborhood, only under pollution.

Today's urban misconception is the belief they need to sacrifice their starry night sky for urban light. Photo by Miranda.com
