2 INTRODUCTION Clocks 2 features primary tasks designed to provide practice and repetition for young learners. The activities include review of analog time and digital time in five and one-minute increments. The book begins with a review of telling time, expressing time in different ways, a.m./p.m., and then graduates on to practical application using elapsed time concepts and word problems. The exercises are suitable for students in grades 3- who would benefit from additional practice or enrichment. 6 Name Five-Minute Increments Numbers 1 through 12 go around the clock face. Each number on the clock stands for minutes. From the 12 to the 1 is fi ve minutes. From the 1 to the 2 is another fi ve minutes and so on. 14 One-Minute Increments Minute marks are the small marks going around the clock. It takes seconds for the minute hand to move from one minute to the next. The minute marks represent one minute each. 22 Past the Hour/To the Hour There are many ways to express time. Imagine that there is a line that goes down the center of the clock face. There are minutes on each side of the line. Did you know that there are many ways to say the time? The LEFT side gives the time before the hour. The RIGHT side gives the time past the hour. 30 Calculating Elapsed Time To find elapsed time, or how much time has passed, first think about how many hours have passed. Then think about how many minutes have passed. Elapsed time means time that has passed. How much time has elapsed from 1200 to 1?
