27 REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR Debbie Podolski January 19, 2016 Business Office The presentative from the New York Insurance Fund performed their annual review of payroll and employee categories. Buildings and Grounds We were very lucky to be able to take advantage of the warm temperatures and proceed with two phases of the step project. The sidewalks around the building have been completed. PSL Industries completed the job in sections to allow patrons access to the building. The concrete for the steps was poured and the original bluestone was set in place. However, there are some areas that need grinding and grouting. Therefore, it was recommended that the fencing remain up until work resumes in the spring. ALIS/NLS The ALIS library directors will be meeting this week to vote to approve the recommendation of the ALIS NLS Investigative Committee to rejoin all ALIS functions with NLS and to approve that the ALIS board proceed with the planning process. I will be the 2016 chair of the ALIS board. Staff As you know, Michelle Tafreshi retired as of December 31. The Reference staff planned a nice retirement luncheon for her. Michelle promises to visit us in the future and plans to travel with her family and continue to work part-time for the Elmont Library. With the resignation of Ann Caruso, I have delegated her duties to Therese Rudden, Christa Lucarelli, and Dolores Nicholes until a new person is hired. Connie Kunkel updated all of the library s CS4s which is the first step to requesting a canvass list. I canvassed the Typist Clerk list to replace the open position due to the resignation of Lyndi Catania. I prepared the canvass letters which were mailed out before the holidays. Valerie Miller and I interviewed fifteen candidates within a two day period. I am happy to report that there were multiple qualified candidates. Based on Civil Service rules to hire within the top three, one of the more qualified candidates was able to be reached. Donna Mullins accepted the position and will start on February 1. I will be sending out canvass letters for Ann Caruso s position this week. Hopefully, the process will be as smooth. The next canvass will be for Therese Rudden s position. 28 Report of Assistant Director January 19, 2016 Submitted by Christa Lucarelli The New Year brought about some changes in the children s department. We have completely revamped the playroom using the Family Place Library standards as guidelines. We began by taking inventory of the toys that were in the playroom. If the toy did not fit the Family Place Library criteria for aiding in early childhood development, it was removed from the room. Additionally, all electronic toys were removed from the room as they do not allow for open ended play. We then removed the storage units and toys from the stage and placed them on the main floor of the playroom. Now all of the toys are easily accessible to the children and within their range of vision. Each cubby of the storage units has been labeled so the children and adults can return the toys to their proper place. We rearranged some of the adult seating in the children s department and were able to bring comfortable seating into the playroom for the adults using the room with their children. We created a reading nook on the stage consisting of a book case, comfortable chairs, and a selection of board books for the adult and child to share. We have noticed quite a few children enjoying the books we have put on display and have had many parents comment how much they like the way the room is now arranged. I have been working on the book bundles with the Readers Advisory librarians. The inaugural bundles are all biographical in nature and there are approximately 12 bundles ready for circulation. These bundles can contain a biography, a cookbook, a DVD, a compact disc, a fiction book or a nonfiction book depending on the person the bundle is about. Additional bundles will be created as needed or on a monthly basis. The librarians are already hard at work creating bundles for next month for our patrons. Though it is still quite cold outside it is time to start planning for warmer temperatures. This year s summer reading club theme is Ready, Set, Read. I will begin meeting with each department next month to create a timeline for summer reading preparation. We have already ordered some of our supplies and will begin to brainstorm and divide up the responsibilities. Last year we received many donations from local businesses and hope the same will be true this year. We will begin to solicit donations next month as well. These donations are used as weekly prizes for children, teens, and adults. The patrons enjoy the opportunity to win a great prize and gives them a bit more incentive to read more and check in with the librarians for their weekly raffle ticket. It promises to be another fun filled summer here at the library! Respectfully Submitted, Christa Lucarelli

32 Adult Programming Board Report Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Submitted by Caryn Emde, Adult Programming Coordinator December is usually a quite month at the library because of the holidays, but we had great turnout for a few of our programs. Fanny Cakes was here on the 1 st for a filled to capacity program in which the instructors showed patrons how to make a cupcake bouquet. The patrons created edible bouquets that looked great and tasted good too! This was my first time using Fanny Cakes and I look forward to having them back in the future. I thought I would try an adult coloring night because adult themed coloring books are so popular right now. I wasn t sure how many people I would get, because of the holidays, but I advertised it as a destress event and I am happy to report that we had 14 people show up! Many of the patrons enjoyed it so much that they wanted to make it an ongoing program, so I have scheduled them once a month for the upcoming year. I am in high hopes that we will get more patrons for the upcoming dates. Our concert this month was in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay Distinguished Artist series: the band Just Sixties performed the show The Stories! The Songs! In between songs the band talked about the events and culture of the 1960s and engaged the audience with trivia questions. We had over 160 people dancing in the aisles and singing along it was a very fun show and a good time was had by all!

34 December Young Adult Board Report January 19, 2016 Natalie Korsavidis, Head of Young Adult In order to help me plan upcoming teen programs, I decided to create a survey for them to fill out. I made multiple copies and placed them in the teen room. The surveys were also given out to the teen volunteers at the Monday night Triple P program. I added programs for May and June based on the filled out surveys I was given. Graphic novels are always a big hit with the teens. To end the year, I put up a graphic novel display. It s been filled a few times and I have seen teens and adults flip through the books as they were in the room. I plan to keep this display up until the end of January I was installed as President of the Young Adult Services Division of the Nassau County Library Association this month. I already have a wonderful program planned for the Long Island Library Conference and hope to create some great workshops for the young adult librarians in Nassau County. 35 December 2015 Youth Services Board Report January 19, 2016 Submitted by Elena Jannello Natalie Korsavidis Inspired by a blog post online, I hosted a Stuffed Animal Pet Show at the end of December. Each child that attended brought their favorite stuffed animal. The children were able to make new collars or bracelets for their stuffed friends with foam strips. For decorations, they had beads, gems, pomp oms, and foam shapes. I also put out various fabric pieces if they wanted to add extra embellishments and combs to make sure their stuffed friends were runway ready. Once they were all decorated and dressed up, the children wrote their stuffed friends names on index cards and what was special about them. It was then runway time. Each child walked down the room with their animal as I read the information about their stuffed friend to loud applause. Both the children and the parents had a wonderful time; the children especially loved being in the spotlight as they showed off their friends. Elena Jannello This month I have been busy gathering materials for our revamped Parent/Child Workshop that begins January 14, I have been creating bibliographies, organizing informational handouts and pamphlets, and pulling print materials for each of the five weeks of this program. We are excited to bring this new program to our patrons as it will now be more aligned with the guidelines and mission put forth by Family Place Libraries, which is to increase the capacity of libraries throughout the nation to recognize and realize their full potential as community hubs for healthy child and family development, parent and community involvement and lifelong learning beginning at birth. Lauren Florez This month I created Holiday Storytimes to Go and switched over to Winter Storytimes to Go, both of which were very popular. Total Storytimes to Go checked out to date is 326. I ran various children's programs and put up displays. Jennifer Montalbano This month for four weeks we ran the Tiny Tumbling Tots program for children ages 1-4 years. It was a success; the program was very well attended and the children had an opportunity to work and enhance on their gross motor skills through the use of various equipment in our programming room, such as ride on toys, a play tunnel, a mini ball pit, and a slide just to name a few. Parachute play and songs concluded the session. I am looking forward to running it again in the future! Victoria Curran As we get closer to the start of our Parent Child Workshop, planning and preparing has been in full force. Throughout the month of December, we finished ordering and organizing all of the new items purchased for this program. These new items will enable us to follow the recommended stations, each geared towards aspects of child development. The infant toy section, for example, is now filled with stacking items, toys that teach cause and effect, and sensory friendly items that will encourage

36 December 2015 Youth Services Board Report January 19, 2016 Submitted by Elena Jannello hands-on interaction. We've expanded the blocks section as well, to include multiple different textures and sizes, all readily available for imaginative play. Other sections include, puzzles, dramatic play, music, transportation, and manipulatives. We are looking forward to offering this great program to encourage parent and child interaction and to offer the members of our community a chance to talk with child development professionals. In addition to the preparation for Parent Child Workshop, we also dedicated a lot of time to our Triple P programs. I am happy to report that we still have about 75 participants attending each night, including both participants and volunteers. During December, Mr. Berardi, one of the middle school gym teachers, ran physical fun activities that the children enjoyed. We also offered games, crafts, and hands-on activities for the group as an alternative option. Coming up, we are looking forward to a Paint Night, Bingo, a Magic Show, Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, and much, much more!
