Jm Jones, mf As the car turned onto Independence Avenue, the Presdent sad that he would really lke to take a drve out to Dupont Crcle and to the 18th and Columba Road area to look at "hppes," because he'd never seen one, he sad. _' At the Smthsonan, the Presdent stopped the car and sad he'd trade cars wth, the Secret Servce, so hs party changed nto the Secret Servce follow- \ up -- a Staton Wagon. -- w/ drver, mf, and Lem Johns n front seat. Vcky McHugh. Mrs. Johnson, and the Presdent n second seat, and I Jones and Smon McHugh n rear. The Presdent ddn't fnd the ar condtonng adequate, so he lowered hs wndow and put hs elbow on the wndow and sort of leaned out. He was recognzed by passng toursts. at a stop lght -- they were qut e surprsed to say the least to see the Presdent leanng out the wndow of a Mercury staton wagon -- and, the Presdent dd stop and say. "How are you?" ASB The Secret servce were followng behnd n th e Presdent's lmousne. On Connectcut Avenue, the Presdent sad he thought he ought to hde hs face a bt, so he put on hs dark glasses. At Dupont Crcle, the Presdent asked j Mrs. Johnson to try to fnd some "hppes" for hm to see -- not many were out, but the Presdent dd get to see a couple of them. The car followed the outer secton of the crcle two tmes around, and then moved to the nner : secton...fo r two tmes around, The second tme around the Presdent got a j good look at the long hared, necklace draped, rope ted clothed fellows j sttng around on the benches. He took specal nterest n one who had a!_ bundle of pamphlets under hs arm, dstrbutng them to anyone who would I j take them The second tme around, people began to notce the bg black lmousne and the Presdent sad we had better get on our way.
