Also, after receiving votes in each of the previous two weeks, Coastal entered the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll at #30. Coastal s streak came to an end Tuesday with a 5-1 loss at #1 North Carolina. However, during Coastal Carolina s nine-game win streak, the Chanticleers out-scored their opponents 60-20, batted.292 with 13 doubles, four triples and four home runs. On the mound, the CCU staff posted a 1.53 ERA over the span with 65 strikeouts versus 27 walks in 88 innings with an opponent batting average of.214. As mentioned, prior to the streak, Coastal was 4-8 after losing four straight in early March, marking Coastal s first four-game losing streak since mid-april CCU vs RU Coastal Carolina owns a all-time advantage over Radford, including a 31-7 mark in home games, in a series that dates back to Coastal was dominant in the early portion of the series, winning 19 of the first 22, and have held the upper hand of late, winning 10 of the last 11 and 36 of the last 41. CCU vs #1 UNC For the second time this season, Coastal Carolina traveled to Chapel Hill to face the nation s top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. While Coastal dropped a 7-1 decision in the third game of the season, Coastal made a much better showing even though the outcome does not seem that much different, losing 5-1 this past Tuesday. In his first career start, Coastal Carolina sophomore Austin Kerr took a no hitter and 1-0 lead one out into the sixth inning at consensus #1 North Carolina before allowing a walk, triple and sacrifice fly and trail 2-1. The top-ranked Tar Heels would score three runs off CCU s bullpen in the seventh and hand #26 Coastal Carolina a 5-1 loss. Coastal out-hit the Tar Heels, 8-4, and got a hit in seven of the nine innings, while UNC only got hits in the decisive sixth and seventh innings. Kerr used two double plays to have innings in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. He would have had a inning the first inning but a two-out error forced him to face four batters in the frame. Kerr (2-1) would be saddled with the loss. Jacob May broke a scoreless tie in the fourth GAME 38 (6 pm) 39 (6 pm) 40 (2 pm) April 19-21, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 3 2013 BIG SOUTH STANDINGS inning as he hit the second pitch of the inning over the right field wall for his fourth round-tripper of the season. Coastal threatened in the top of the sixth. Blackman had a leadoff single, as CCU had a hit in five of the first six innings. After an out, Jacob May walked. Will Remillard just missed an RBI opportunity with a line drive that went just foul. Chris Munnelly would go on to get a strikeout before hitting Alex Buccilli to load the bases. Munnelly would escape with a second strikeout to keep the score 1-0. North Carolina made the Chants pay for the missed opportunity. With one out in the sixth, Parks Jordan drew a walk. Chaz Frank followed with an RBI triple, which also broke up the no hitter for Kerr. The Tar Heels added a run when Colin Moran hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field. Kerr left after six complete and North Carolina exploded for three runs off the CCU bullpen. Coastal had one final chance, loading the bases with two outs in the ninth before a ground out ended the game. What a Week Coastal Carolina went 5-0 last week, playing a rare Monday game to make up for a rain out. Starting Monday, Coastal beat Liberty 12-1 to complete a a series sweep and run its win streak over Liberty to 20 dating back to On Wednesday, Coastal out-lasted the College of Charleston 2-1 in a 14-inning game the second longest contest in CCU history while striking out 19. On Friday, the Chants pulled out a 3-2, 11-inning game. On Saturday, Coastal banged out a season-high 18 hits, scoring eight runs in the third inning. On Sunday, Coastal completed a second-straight conference sweep with a 4-3 win at Winthrop. Record Breaking Win Versus CofC Coastal Carolina claimed a 2-1 win over College of Charleston in 14 innings on April 10 in Myrtle Beach. Not only was that Coastal s second-longest game played (longest being a 16-inning game versus Indiana in 2011) bu the longest of the year in terms of time covered 4:05. In the win, eight Chanticleer pitchers combined to strikeout a program-best 19 Cougars. (Note, CCU struck out 16 Cougars in nine innings last season.) Also, Will Remillard set CCU single-game records with 20 putouts and 23 chances. Extra! Extra! After playing a marathon 14-innning game on Wednesday versus the College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina turned around and played an 11-inning game at Winthrop on Friday. Coastal Carolina is 3-2 in extra inning games this season. Coastal lost a 10-inning game versus then #10 NC State (5-4) on March 3. The Chants split a pair of extra inning games at VMI to end the month of March. Coastal won game one on Friday, 3-2 in 12 innings, then lost 10-9 in 10 innings the next in the back-end of a doubleheader. Going 3-2 in extra inning games may not sound very impressive. However, Coastal has had very little success playing free baseball over the past two years, going just 1-13 (0-6 in 2011 and 1-7 in 2012) in such games. Big South Conference Series Win Streak Coastal Carolina has won 12 straight, three-game conference series, including five sweeps. The last time CCU lost a conference three-game series was May 13-15, 2011 when the Chanticleers dropped two of three at Winthrop, (NOTE: Not included in the total was when Coastal split with Winthrop last season as the third game was rained out.) Speaking of Streaks; Blackman has Streaks of 26 and 9 Ted Blackman has reached base safely (hit/walk/hit by pitch) in 26 consecutive games. Also, he and Alex Buccilli both have a hit in nine straight games. Both Blackman and Buccilli started very slow this season Blackman batting as low as games ago and Buccilli batting as low as games ago. However, Blackman is batting a Big South-best.476 in 12 league games and Buccilli ranks second with a.471 batting averga in league games. Connolly Sets CCU/Big South Records; Climbing NCAA List Preseason All-American Ryan Connolly earned the save at Wake Forest and in the process tied CCU and Big South records for games pitched. Connolly then picked up a save in a Saturday win over Gardner-Webb to set the CCU and Big South standard for career appearances by pitcher (118), breaking the record formerly held by Coastal s Byron Binda of 117 from Connolly, who has 18 appearances this season, now has 125 career appearances with nine saves this season. Connolly set a CCU and Big South record in 2010 with 40 appearances in earning Freshman All-American honors. Connolly led the Big South in appearances in 2011 with 32 and tied teammate Aaron Burke for the Big South lead in appearances with 35 appearances in CCU AND BIG SOUTH CAREER APPEARANCES 1. Ground is Broken March 12 The construction fences went up last August and shortly thereafter demolition began on Watson Stadium, the CCU Softball Stadium and surrounding area. Soon after the bid to build the $10.2 million Baseball/Softball Complex was awarded to Chancel Builders out of Conway, Coastal Carolina held an official groundbreaking ceremony. Among the dignitaries were CCU President Dr. David DeCenzo, Tami Springs Brooks the lead benefactor of the project, and head coaches Gary Gilmore and Kelley Green. The Lykens, Pa., native pitched a total of eight innings, allowing one unearned run and three hits. The Wildcats batted just.120 off the righthander while drawing four walks and striking out five times. In addition, Herb registered seven assists and two unassisted put outs on ball hit back to him. He was responsible for 14 of the 24 outs over his eight innings (5 Ks, 7 assists and 2 unassisted putouts). Of the three hits he allowed, Herb surrendered a single in each of the first three innings. In the first, the player with a single was erased on an inning-ending double play. In the second, the single would lead to K-State s lone run. However, the run was only scored as a result of a CCU error that would have ended the inning (a misplayed ground ball to third). In the third, a single led to a defining moment in the game as he advanced to third with two outs. K-State s Ross Kivett hit a sharp line drive back up the middle. Herb deflected the ball with his foot, sprinted toward the third base line and threw out the runner at first to keep the game at 1-0 in K-State s favor. (Coastal would score one in the fourth and one in the seventh for the 2-1 win.) Including the play to end the third, Herb would retire 16 of his final 18 batters faced, walking two, with four of his five strikeouts and six of six of his assists. As a result, Herb was directly responsible for 11 of his final 16 outs. Jacob May AND Ben Smith Sweep Big South Weekly Honors (Mar. 11) Coastal Carolina junior centerfielder Jacob May was named the Big South Choice Hotels Player of the Week and sophomore left-hander Ben Smith was selected the Crons Brand Big South Pitcher of the Week. May batted.533 with eight hits to lead Coastal Carolina to a 3-2 record last week. The centerfielder hit safely in every game he played and posted three games with two hits. He added a pair of doubles and a home in the five-game span. In fact, May accounted for two of CCU s three runs in a 3-1 win over Ohio State, hitting a solo home run and scoring after hitting a double. He also played a key role in the field for the Chanticleers. In the win versus Harvard with runners on second and third, May made a diving catch for the final out in the first inning and threw a runner out at the plate in the ninth to preserve the shutout. Smith pitched a then career-best 6.1 shutout innings in the win over Ohio State on March 10, giving CCU s Gary Gilmore his 700th win as the Chanticleer head coach.
