I n e i t h e r case t h e r e i s room behind the f r o n t seats v/hich can be used e i t h e r f o r o c c a s i o n a l s e a t i n g o r t o supplement t h e luggage space p r o v i d e d i n the boot. A c o m p l e t e l y concealed f o l d away hood and w i n d down s i d e windows g i v e t h e car a l l weather comfort. The s t y l i s h detachable hard top, which i s s o l d s e p a r a t e l y, can be e a s i l y removed f o r s t o r a g e when not r e q u i r e d. NEW.POWER UNIT The 1494 c.c. engine, v/hich develops G3.5 b.h.p. a t,300 r.p.m., has an aluminium c y l i n d e r head g i v i n g e x c e l l e n t c o o l i n g c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s and a l l o w i n g t h e use o f a h i g h compression r a t i o o f 9.2 t o 1. Use i s a l s o made o f t w i n c a r b u r e t t o r s and a s t r e a m l i n e d t w i n exhaust system t o ensure h i g h performance w i t h t h e most e f f i c i e n t use o f f u e l. DISC BRAKES G i r l i n g d i s c brakes have been f i t t e d t o t h e f r o n t wheels where the major s t r a i n o f heavy b r a k i n g i s taken. These are s e l f a d j u s t i n g, fade f r e e, easy t o s e r v i c e, and e x t r e m e l y e f f e c t i v e a t h i g h speeds. High e f f i c i e n c y drum brakes w i t h a l i n i n g area o f 30 sq. i n s. have been f i t t e d a t t h e r e a r. The Rootes s t y l i s t s have made use o f Sunbeam's l o n g experience o f i n t e r n a t i o n a l r a l l i e s i n d e s i g n i n g the i n t e r i o r, which i s p a r t i c u l a r l y spacious f o r a car o f i t s s i z e and c l a s s. Both f r o n t s e a t s, which are a d j u s t a b l e f o r e and a f t and t i p f o r w a r d t o a l l o w t h e r e a r compartment t o be e a s i l y reached, are o f deep foam rubber and p r o v i d e n o t o n l y comfort over l o n g d i s t a n c e s, but a f i r m g r i p d u r i n g f a s t c o r n e r i n g. The padded arm r e s t between the f r o n t seats conceals a roomy l o c k a b l e glove box and t h e r e i s, i n a d d i t i o n, a convenient open cubby box i n the f a c i a panel. BUILT-IN VENTILATION SYSTEM A v e n t i l a t i o n system, which can be c o n t r o l l e d t o d i r e c t f r e s h c o o l a i r t o the screen or t o the i n t e r i o r, i s b u i l t i n t o the car and can be used whether or not the h e a t e r, a v a i l a b l e as an e x t r a i s f i t t e d. The spare wheel i s kept i n a separate compartment i n the luggage boot, l e a v i n g ample room f o r normal s i z e s u i t cases. The p e t r o l tank has a c a p a c i t y o f 9 g a l l o n s. I n standard f o r m the A l p i n e has pressed s t e e l wheels w i t h brake c o o l i n g a p e r t u r e s, but c e n t r e l o c k w i r e wheels w i t h knock on hub caps are a l s o a v a i l a b l e. F i v e s i n g l e tone c o l o u r schemes w i t h black hoods or hard tops and harmonising i n t e r i o r t r i m s are being produced - T h i s t l e Grey, C a r n i v a l Red, Glen Green, Moonstone and Embassy Black.
