4 Ten selected publications 1. Efficient implementation of the Gutzwiller variational method. N. Lanata, H. Strand, X. Dai, B. Hellsing, Phys. Rev. B, 85(2012) (3 citations). 2. Photoelectron driven acoustic surface plasmon in p(2 2)K/Be(0001): Ab initio calculations. V.M. Silkin, B. Hellsing, L. Wallden, P.M. Echenique, E.V. Chulkov, Phys. Rev. B, Brief Report, 81 (2010) (3 citations). Me and Silkin calculated the dynamical response to a moving electron within Time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT)shake-up spectrum surface caused by a photoelectron. We were able to explain the spectral peak not reproduced by DFT calculation. This was the first study indicating that acoustic surface plasmons could be manifested also by electrons trapped in the quantum well formed by the alkali overlayer. 3. Large surface charge-density oscillations induced by second layer surface phonon resonances. V. Chis, B. Hellsing, G. Benedek, M. Bernasconi, E. Chulkov and J.P. Toennies, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, (2008) (13 citations). A Density functional perturbation theory study explaining the large helium atom scattering intensity from a longitudinal anomalous resonance found in most metal surfaces by the presence of a complex subsurface phonon mode. 4. Overlayer resonance and quantum well state of Cs/Cu(111) studied with angel-resolved photoemission, LEED and first principles calculations. M. Breitholtz, V. Chis, B. Hellsing, S.-Å. Lindgren and L. Wallden, Physical Review B 75(2007) (13 citations). We identified and characterized not only the quantum well state but also the surface resonance below the lower band gap edge, a remnant of the clean surface state band. 5. Two dimensional localization of fast electrons in p(2x2)-cs/cu(111). V. Chis, S.Caravati, G.Butti, M.Trioni, P.Cabrera-Sanfelix, A.Arnau and B. Hellsing, Phys. Rev. B 76 (2007) 1, (11 citations). A high mobility Gap State is predicted for this system. An electron excited to this state will have enough total energy to escape the surface, however trapped due to large parallel momentum. 6. Surface relaxation influenced by surface states. V. Chis and B. Hellsing, Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2004) (23 citations). First principles calculations showed slow convergence of surface lattice relaxation with respect to number of slab layers for surface states near bulk band edge. 7. An inter-facial complex in ZnO and its influence on charge transport. J. Carlsson, H.S.Domingos, P.D. Bristowe and B. Hellsing, Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003) (24 citations). Mechanism for electron localization at ZnO grain boundaries. Defect segregation and Bi impurities yields the formation a Bi Zn +V Zn +O i interfacial complex which results in a localized acceptor state. 8. Electron-Phonon coupling at Metal Surfaces. B. Hellsing, A. Eiguren and E. V. Chulkov, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 14 (2002) 5959 (64 citations). Phonon induced lifetimes of excited surface states. Importance to take into account the full phonon spectrum and screened one-electron potential. 9. Role of bulk and surface phonons in the decay of metal surface states. A. Eiguren, B. Hellsing, F. Reinert, G. Nicolay, E. V. Chulkov, V. M. Silkin, S. Hufner and, P. M. Echenique, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 (2002) (115 citations). 4
5 The first first principles calculations showing the important role of the electron-phonon coupling in quenching excitations of the surface states of Cu(111) and Ag(111). For Ag(111) the lifetime is dominated by this coupling. 10. A first principles investigation of the quantum well system - Na on Cu(111). J. Carlsson and B. Hellsing, Phys. Rev. B 61(2000) (77 citations). The first ab initio calculations confirming speculations of quantum well states formed for this system. 5
