2 Introduction The purpose of our research in Science 2 was to learn about the diversity we have within our entire class. With that activity we were able to specifically find out students backgrounds such their ethnicity, religion, majors they want pursue, etc. The research was important because it made us explore diversity within our class and learn about the different types of people in ways that we can or can not relate to them based on our findings. Overall this research project was to discover the diversity we have in our class and not just the different groups we thought we knew. Methods For the first diversity assignment emphasis on diversity within your class, data was gathered after the lecture with a group that consisted of five Science 2 students. We each had to survey 25 individuals which were among our fellow Science 2 classmates. Everyone within the success team gathered the information needed individually. The data was gathered through a series of questions. It made it all easy to identify our peers because we were all wearing shirts that were strictly Science 2. Findings The questions we focused on for our Science 2 class was ethnicity, gender, first generation college students, class level, belief in God, and if their major was self-chosen. Through our group research we found that the most common ethnicity in our Science 2 class was Hispanic (36%), Asian (30%), and White (10%). While Filipino (8.7%), African American (4.7%), and other ethnicities which made up (10.7%) of the class were the least
3 common. Our group was surprised to see that the Hispanic population made up a large majority of our Science 2 class. We then wanted to see what the findings were for gender, what we found was that woman made up (57.3%) of the class, while men only made up (42.7%). This was interesting to find because during lecture it appears as if the class is gender balanced. In addition to this our group wanted to discover how many of our classmates were first generation college students. What we came to find was that a majority of people in our class (63.3%) were first generation college students, leaving only (36.7%) of students who weren t first generation. This was quite shocking to discover that so many students are first generation, although shocking it is truly great to see that this many students not only represent themselves, but their families as well. Our group also wanted to find out what the class level was for the students in our class. We found that the class is mainly made up of freshmen (94.7%), leaving only (4%) sophomores, and juniors and seniors both at (0.67%). This came as no surprise to us, due to the fact that this class is intended for incoming freshmen. Next we wanted to figure out how many of our classmates believed in God or not. What was revealed was that a majority of students (64.7%) do believe
4 in God, while only (35.3%) do not believe in God. Finally we wanted to uncover how many students chose their major or if their parents had chosen it for them. We discovered that a majority of students (96.7%) had chosen their major, and only (3.3%) of students had their major chosen by their parents. This was excellent to see because we as college must find what major we truly like and can see ourselves in, it is solely our choice and no one else s. Conclusion What we have concluded from the data gathered for our diversity assignment is that there is a wide variety of ethnicities, cultures, and beliefs that we would have never given a second thought about if we had not done said assignment. Some of these findings include gender, class level, belief in god, religion, ethnicity, first generation college students, majors and plans for their future such their career and if they would see themselves being married with kids in 10 years. For gender we found that females were the predominant group over males with the 57 percent females and 43 percent being males in our class. There was a clear correlation between the fact the first generation college students were also the leading group and the fact that the majority of students were found to be freshmen, with very little being sophomores or upperclassmen. As for major, the majority were self-chosen with the highest ranking major being undeclared. And lastly as for future goals and aspirations there was an even split of 50/50 of students who wanted to have kids in ten years and those who didn t want kids in ten years, while there was an even bigger number of students who saw themselves married within ten years and those who didn t. Overall most students knew that they what major they intended to go to and knew they that in ten years they
5 wanted to be well into that career. In conclusion this assignment apart from being statistical facts that enlightened us about our class, gave us insight into the minds of others and how many people also aspire to do great things, and many may have the same goals as us.
