7 Unit 1 Introduction to Physics Essentials Dimensional Analysis Solve the following conversion problems using dimensional analysis. You must show all your work in order to get full credit. 1. How many seconds in 800 minutes? 2. How many years in 500 days? 3. How many minutes in 5 years? 4. How many dozens of eggs are there in 3500 eggs? 5. How many miles in 12,000 yards? 1 mile = 5280 feet 6. How many decades are there in 9 centuries? 7. How many cubic centimeters are there in 190 kiloliters? 7

8 8. On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez struck a reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska, spilling 37,854,120,000 ml of crude oil. What is that volume of oil in liters? 9. The Tent meteorite, found in 1897 near Cape York, on the west coast of Greenland, is the largest meteorite exhibited by any museum. It has a mass of nearly 30,883 kilograms. How much is the mass of this meteorite in milligrams? 10. One of the smallest species of insects in the world is Caraphractus cinctus, a type of wasp. The average mass of this wasp is 0.05 milligrams. Convert this mass into grams. 11. Yosemite Falls, in California, has a total height of 73,900 cm. What is this height in meters? 12. Armando stepped on the scale in his doctor s office and found out that his mass was g. What is his mass in pounds? 1 kg = 2.2 pounds. 13. Scientists studying blue whales off the coast of South Africa calculated that these mammals can descend to depths of nearly 3000 m during their search for food. What is this depth in miles? 1 km = 0.62 miles 14. The French drink about 64 L of mineral water per person per year. How many gallons does each person drink annually? How many gallons does each person drink in a month (30 days)? 1 L = 0.26 gallons 8

Write the following numbers in scientific notation: a. 433 b. 812,000,000 c. 73,000,000,000 d. 84,500 e An electromagnetic wave has a wavelength of m. What is the wavelength in scientific notation? 3. Earth is about 4,500,000,000 years old. Express this number in scientific notation. 4. By some estimates, there are approximately 1,386,000,000 km3 of water on the planet. That s equal to 36,614,237,300,000,000,000,000 gallons of milk! Convert both of these numbers into scientific notation. 5. The diameter of the sun is approximately 1,390,000 km. Express this diameter in scientific notation. 6. An infrared wave has a frequency of 1 x 10^13 Hz and a wavelength of 3 x 10^5 m. Express this frequency and wavelength as decimal numbers. 7. The E. Coli bacterium is about meters long and meters wide. Write these dimensions in scientific notation. 8. Convert the number 6.9 x 10^5 into a decimal number. 9
