2 Length Rulers are used to measure length. Start t measuring by putting the end of what you want to measure at the 0 on the ruler. Length can be measured in inches, centimeters, miles, or meters. You can also measure things with pennies. How many inches (bottom row of ruler) long is each object? How many pennies? How many inches? How many pennies?

3 Length Suggestions for further measuring Give your child about a dozen pennies. Ask them how many pennies long each of these things are? Suggest to them that they go find actual items in the house to measure instead of the pictures below. Repeat the above, but give the child a ruler.

4 Mass Mass is the amount of stuff an object has in it. (Actually, each of the molecules can have different weights, so for this example, mass is the amount of stuff in the object when all the molecules are the same kind.) Color the box with the most mass red. Color the box with the least mass blue. Do two boxes have the same mass? If so, color them green. 6 How do you measure weight? A scale is used to measure weight. A scale tells you how much something weighs. The more mass something has, the more it weighs. A scale is used to measure weight. Circle the object below that has the least mass in red. Circle the object below that has the most mass in green. Are there two objects that might be close to the same weight? If so, underline them in blue.

7 Temperature Temperature is how hot or cold something is. If something is hot, it has a high temperature and the molecules move fast. If something is cold, it has a cold temperature and the molecules move slowly. Thermometers are used to measure temperature. Temperature is measured in degrees. Circle the hot things in a red crayon and the cold things in a blue crayon.

8 Temperature Game Suggestion Explain to the children that hot molecules move fast and cold molecules move slowly or just vibrate in place. Take the kids outside and ask them to pretend to be a cold molecule, then a warm molecule, then a hot molecule, and then a very hot molecule. The kids should stand relatively still for the cold molecule and be running their fastest for the very hot molecule.

9 Volume Volume measures the amount of a fluid. Sometimes the shape of the container can trick you, so to measure volume you pour liquid into a standardized measuring container. Volume can be measured in units of ounces, liters, or gallons. Graduated cylinder Measuring cup

10 Volume Play Suggestion Give the child two different kinds of glasses and put water in each one. One glass should be tall and skinny and the other short and fat. Ask the child which one has more. Then ask the child to pour the contents, one by one, into a measuring cup and find out which one really had more water in it.

11 Time Does it take longer to brush your teeth or run around your house ten times? One might seem longer than the other, but it might not be right, because you might like doing one more than the other. Time is how long something takes. Time is measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years. Time is measured with a clock.

12 What do you use to measure? Draw a line from the objects to what you would use to measure them.
