1 PHI7470 Topics in Applied Philosophy: The Philosopher and Sociology Mr. Lui Ping Keung Sociology grew and continues to grow from philosophy. At the same time, sociology has made remarkable achievements of its own which philosophers should but may not be aware of. In fact, there is now a crowded terrain of ontologies, most of which are social or sociological theories, between the poles of philosophy and sociology. The course will walk through it from the pole of philosophy to that of sociology, hoping that students can learn on the way to appreciate the intimate connection that is or should be between the two disciplines. Groups will be responsible on a rotational basis for writing protocols, presenting selected readings, making presentation on selected topics. Selected readings and selected topics will be distributed in due course. A write up on the topic presented should be handed in by the group concerned two weeks after the presentation. Protocols are semi verbatim records of the lectures, whose purpose is to capture in a fairly detailed way what has been said. These protocols will be edited by the student helper attending this course into a sensible draft of lecture notes, copies of which will be made available to you as a record of what you have learnt.
