77 Physics Project Motion Analysis apps of Android phone Motion Analysis apps of Android Phone Part I Accelerometer 1. Install Accelerometer Monitor in an Android phone. Search the key word Accelerometer Monitor in Google Play Usually this apps is at the top of the list. When it is successfully installed, the following icon can be found in the application screen. 2. Click the icon to start the apps. You should get the following screen showing the a-t graphs. There are four graphs: x, y, z and resultant. Click the check boxes to unselect the unnecessary ones. select the graphs shown 50 samples per second graphs only z is selected and shown (white graph) time 3. The phone will measure the acceleration repeatedly. You can save the data in a file. Click the setting button of you phone (usually at the bottom left of the phone). A screen will come out with three options: Settings, Start Saving and Activate Alarm. Click Start Saving to start and Stop Saving to Stop. P.1

78 Physics Project Motion Analysis apps of Android phone 4. Click Settings to change the settings. In most circumstances, the default setting is fine. The motion sensor counts the earth gravity as an apparent acceleration of ms downwards. A stationary phone will read roughly 9.8 ms in the vertical direction. The phone provides a function to eliminate this but it does not work accurately. Do not use Remove Earth Gravity as this option does not work properly for phone with no gyroscope. We can subtract the measured values by 9.8 (or more correctly, the initial value measured when the phone is stationary) later to correct for this. Click Sensor Speed to select the suitable sensor speed. Use Slowest for projects like motion of elevator or MTR. It provides a sampling rate of 5 samples per second. Use higher speed (e.g. Game) for experiment like measurement of g. To plot a good graph, around 100 samples are suitable. Too much samples make it difficult to handle. P.2

79 Physics Project Motion Analysis apps of Android phone 5. The data are saved in the folder accdata in your phone. Depending on your setting, the data may be saved in SD card or internal storage. You may need to install a suitable driver in your computer to read the phone through USB. Remark: in some Andriod phones, it is found that there is problem in reading this folder from computer. You may copy the files to other location (e.g. root directory) of your phone by Android File Commander, etc. 6. Open the folder and copy the files (in txt format) to your computer. 7. As the apps does not provide any software to edit the data, we need to use Excel to plot graphs. Open the file in Excel. Remember to select the suitable file type in Excel so that the filename appears in the list. The following part shows the operation using Excel P.3

80 Physics Project Motion Analysis apps of Android phone 8. When the dialog box appears, select space as separators of data. Select using delimiter. Click Next. Click Next. Select Space here. Click Finish 9. If the file is opened properly, the data will be shown in a table. Ignore this part. As Space is used as delimiter, this part does not match the table below. X Y Z t The first three columns are accelerations in x, y and z directions. The unit is ms -2. The fourth column is time interval t. The unit is millisecond (10-3 s). P.4

The real time can be found by summing up t. 12. An Excel template (template.xls) is included to convert the data into the conventional s-t, v-t and a-t graphs. Cut and paste the column of t and a (one of X, Y or Z depending on how you point your phone) into the template and it will do the numerical integration to get the s-t, v-t and a-t tables. To eliminate the false reading of gravity, enter the initial reading of a when the phone is stationary. (Note: the table contains up to 100 rows of data. It is not needed to use all rows. If more rows are required, please drag the row down.) Enter the value of the measure direction when the phone is stationary. Copy and paste the column of X/Y/Z and t from the last file to here. a-t, v-t and x-t graphs data is then found. P.5

Search the key word Smart Compass in Google Play Usually this apps is at the top of the list. When it is successfully installed, the following icon can be found in the application screen. 2. Click the icon to start the apps. You should get the following screen showing the compass. When the phone is held at a vertical position, two angles, roll and pitch, are shown in the bottom corner of the phone. roll pitch 3. To measure the inclination of a plane, place the straight edge of the phone along the plane. Set the pitch to as close to 90 o as possible. The inclination is shown by P.6

For these phones you may use the camera of the phone to line up the plane with the cross hair in the screen. The roll is the inclination of the plane. The diagram below shows how the inclination of a table is measured by using the camera. 5. Click MENU to enter the setup page of the apps. Usually the default is fine. Make sure that camera is turned on so that roll and pitch are displayed. P.7

86 NSS Physics SBA Experiment p.1/5 Name: CSNO: Group: Acceleration along an inclined plane Objective: To determine the effect of inclination angle on the acceleration down an inclined plane Apparatus: 2 smart phones Inclined plane Trolley Blu-tack Soft cloth Old text books Theory When a trolley moves down along an inclined plane, it accelerates under the action of friction and the component of its weight along the plane. As the component of its weight depends on the angle of inclination, the acceleration increases as increases. friction f weight component W sin In analysis of inclined plane, you may take the weight component as W sin and assume the friction is independent on for small angles ( < 10 o ). Procedures 1. Install the apps Accelerometer and Smart Compass in your mobile phones. Study the user manual before you come to the laboratory. You may try these apps at home. 2. Set up an inclined plane along the side bench of the laboratory. 3. Attach a mobile phone with blu-tack on top of the trolley. The y-direction (refer to the user manual) should be pointing to the forward direction of the phone. Make sure the phone is firmly fixed. If required, you may use adhesive tape to fix the phone. Do not use an expensive phone for this purpose as it may be risky to get the phone scratched. P.1

To avoid over-speed, the inclination should be limited to be lower than 10 o. Place a piece of soft cloth at the bottom end to absorb the impact of the trolley. 5. Measure the inclination of the plane with the apps Smart Compass in another phone. 6. Put the trolley with the first smart phone on top side of the plane. Run the apps Accelerometer and start saving. 7. Release the trolley while the smart phone is capturing data. As the trolley reaches the bottom side of the trolley, stop saving at once. 8. Now reduce the inclination by removing one or two books. Repeat steps (5) to (7) for at least five more angles. Notice that the trolley may accelerate very slowly as the angle P.2

Open the text file with Excel as according to the steps in user manual. Locate the part in the table corresponding to the acceleration in the y-direction before and after the trolley is released. The initial reading is not zero since there is a false reading due to gravity. Get the mean acceleration before and after the trolley is released along the y-direction. However, teachers should feel free to devise their own innovative or/and project-based practical activities for assessment in particular areas of the syllabus as long as they are of appropriate standard and can meet the criteria for awarding marks. There is no list of prescribed or recommended practical work which must be used for assessment purposes since teaching interests and resources vary from school to school.
