1 Journal of Nonlinear Mahemaical Physics 1998, V.5, N 1, 8 1. Leer Classical and Nonclassical Symmeries of a Generalied Boussinesq Equaion M.L. GANDARIAS and M.S. BRUZON arxiv:mah-ph/980106v1 1 Jan 1998 Deparameno de Maemaicas, Universidad de Cadi, P.O. BOX 40, 11510, Puero Real, Cadi, Spain mlgand@merlin.uca.es Received Augus 19, 1997; Acceped Ocober 30, 1997 Absrac We apply he Lie-group formalism and he nonclassical mehod due o Bluman and Cole o deduce symmeries of he generalied Boussinesq equaion, which has he classical Boussinesq equaion as an special case. We sudy he class of funcions fu for which his equaion admi eiher he classical or he nonclassical mehod. The reducions obained are derived. Some new eac soluions can be derived. The Boussinesq equaion arises in several physical applicaions, he firs one was propagaion of long waves in shallow waer [3]. There have been several generaliaions of he Boussinesq equaion such as he modified Boussinesq equaion, or he dispersive waer wave. Anoher generalied Boussinesq equaion is u u +fu+u = 0, 1 which has he classical Boussinesq equaion as an special case for fu = u +u. Recenly condiions for he finie-ime blow-up of soluions of 1 have been invesigaed by Liu [8]. In his work we classify he Lie symmeries of 1 and we sudy he class of funcions fu for which his equaion is invarian under a Lie group of poin ransformaions. Mos of he required heory and descripion of he mehod can be found in [, 10, 11]. Moivaed by he fac ha symmery reducions for many PDE s are known ha are no obained using he classical Lie group mehod, here have been several generaliaions of he classical Lie group mehod for symmery reducions. Clarkson and Kruskal [4] inroduced an algorihmic mehod for finding symmery reducions, which is known as he direc mehod. Bluman and Cole [1] developed he nonclassical mehod o sudy he symmery reducions of he hea equaion. The basic idea of he mehod is o require ha boh he PDE 1 and he surface condiion Copyrigh c 1998 by M.L. Gandarias and M.S. Bruon
2 Symmeries of a Generalied Boussinesq Equaion 9 Φ p +q r = 0, mus be invarian under he infiniesimal generaor. These mehods were generalied and called condiional symmeries by Fushchych e al [5] and also by Olver and Rosenau [6, 7] o include weak symmeries, side condiions or differenial consrains. We consider he classical Lie group symmery analysis of equaion 1. Invariance of equaion 1 under a Lie group of poin ransformaions wih infiniesimal generaor V = p,,u +q,,u +r,,u leads o a se of welve deermining equaions for he infiniesimals. For oally arbirary fu, he only simmeries are he group of space and ime ranslaions which are defined by he infiniesimal generaors V 1 =, V =. 4 We obain ravelling wave reducions = λ, u = h, 5 where h, afer inegraing wice wih respec o, saisfies h +λ 1h+fh = k 1 +k, 6 wih k 1 and k arbirary consans. The only funcional forms of fu, wih fu cons. and fu nonlinear, which have era symmeries are given in Table 1 Table 1: Symmeries for he generalied Boussinesq equaion. 3 i fu V i 3 1 dau+b n +u+c + + a1 n au+b dlogau+b+u+c + + a au+b 3 de au+b +u+c + a We observe ha equaion 6 wih fh = dah+b n +kh can be solved. Seing λ = 1 k and k 1 = 0 he soluion is For m = n+1 and n 1, am ± 1/ ak h+k 3 m dah+b m 1/ dh = +k 4.
3 10 M.L. Gandarias and M.S. Bruon For n = 1, ± a 1/ ak h+k 3 dlog ah+b 1/ dh = +k 4. For n =, depending upon he choice of he consans, his equaion is solvable; for k 1 0 in erms of he firs Painlevé equaion, and ellipic or elemenary funcions if k 1 = 0. For n = 3, seing k 1 = k = 0, he equaion is solvable in erms of he Jacobi ellipic funcions. In Table we lis he corresponding similariy variables and similariy soluions. Table : Each row gives he funcions fu for which 1 can be reduced o an ODE, as well as he corresponding similariy variables and similariy soluions. i V i 3 fu i u i 1 V 1 3 f = dau+b n +ku+c 1 1 n h b a V 3 f = dlogau+b+u+c 3 V 3 3 f = de au+b +u+c h b a 1 a logh In he Table 3 we show he ODE s o which PDE 1 is reduced by Table 3: Symmeries for he generalied Boussinesq equaion wih k = nda n. V i 3 ODEi V 1 3 h + 4 +khn 1 V 3 4h h +4dhh h +h h h = 0 h +kn 1h n h + n h + nh 4 n 1 = 0 V 3 3 4gg + g + g +k 1 +k de g = 0 ODE1 for n =, muliplied by, can be inegraed once and we obain 3 4 +hk h +h + h h k h = 0.
4 Symmeries of a Generalied Boussinesq Equaion 11 ODE1 for n = 3, can be inegraed once and we obain 4 +h k h + 3h 4 +h = 0. ODE1 for n = 1, inegraing once, we obain 4 + k h h h 4 +h = 0. ODE3 wih h = e g has been obained afer inegraing wice wih respec o. In he nonclassical mehod one requires only he subse of soluions of 1 and o be invarian under he infiniesimal generaor 3. In he case q 0 we may se q,,u = 1 in wihou loss of generaliy. The nonclassical mehod applied o 1 gives rise o a se of eigh nonlinear deermining equaions for he infiniesimals. The soluions for hese equaions depend on he funcion fu. We can disinguish he following cases: For fu = du +bu+c, he soluion is p = dp 1 +p, r = p 1 p 1 +p 1 +p 1 p +p p 1 +4p 1p +dp 1 u+p p +p 1 p +1 bp 1, where p 1 = h hd h, p = k 1 p 1 h +k p 1, and h saisfies h = k 3 h 3 +k 4 7 Here k 1,...,k 4 are arbirary cosans. Equaion 7 is solvable in erms of he Weiersrass ellipic funcions if k 3 k 4 0, and in erms of elemenary funcions oherwise. Solving 7 for h yields he si canonical symmery reducions derived by Clarkson for he classical Boussinesq equaion using he nonclassical mehod, and by Clarkson and Kruskal using he direc mehod. For any oher funcion fu lised in Table 1 he same symmeries, as were obained by he classical mehod, appear. References [1] Bluman G.W. and Cole J.D., J. Mah. Mech., 1969, V.18, 105.
