EIU heads into the game at overall after splitting their doubleheader with UT Martin this past Friday. The Mastodons are 9-31 on the season after dropping a three-game series at South Dakota State in their last outing. Junior pitcher Jessica Wireman picked up her eighth straight win against the Skyhawks. She allowed only one run in her complete game win throwing seven strikeouts. Kayla Bear was caught stealing for the first time this season against UT Martin. EIU previously faced the Mastodons during their season-opening tournament in Rosemont, Ill. The Panthers were victorious in that game run-ruling Fort Wayne 10-0 in five innings. The Panthers have beaten Fort Wayne in both of the two previous meetings between the two schools. The Mastodons are led by sophomore Lauren Watson who leads the Summit League with a.354 batting average. Watson also leads the team in stolen bases with 11 placing her third in the league. Fort Wayne s Caitlyn DeLong is the power hitter of the team leading the Mastodons in doubles, home runs, and RBIs this season. DeLong is also the team leader in runs scored with 19 on the year. Panther Rankings After going 5-for-9 over the past week, Taylor Monahan increased her team-leading batting average to.373. Currently, Monahan ranks seventh in the OVC. Monahan, along with Kayla Bear, still make up two of the top three stolen base leaders in the OVC. Monahan added two swiped bags to her total over the past week. After picking up her seventh conference win of the year Friday, Jessica Wireman is now second in the OVC. Only SIUE s Haley Chambers-Book has a better conference record going 8-0 in the OVC so far this year. Despite a three-game drought, Bear is still fifth in the OVC for runs scored with 36 so far this season. Her 36 runs puts her in a three-way tie for 10th on the single-season runs scored list at EIU. The Panther defense remains second in OVC play with a.982 fielding percentage despite two errors against UTM. Last Time Out The Panthers split their doubleheader against UT Martin in their last outing winning the first game 3-1 before falling to the Skyhawks by a matching 3-1 score. Taylor Monahan extended her hitting streak to 10 games going 3-for-6 over the two-game span. Tori Johnson had an excellent outing against UTM as well finishing the series 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. FIRST SEASON (NINTH OVERALL) KIM INDIANA STATE, 2001 SCHUETTE Kim Schuette, the winningest coach in Eastern Illinois softball history, will have a chance to add to that legacy as EIU Director of Athletics Tom Michael welcomed her back as the Panthers head softball coach on Aug. 26. Schuette begins her second stint as the Panthers head coach following three seasons as Purdue s head coach. Schuette was the Panthers head coach from winning 232 games including 122 OVC contests. She was named the OVC Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013 as the Panthers won conference regular season titles. During her time at EIU the Panthers finished in the upper division of the OVC race in six out of eight seasons making the conference tournament all but one year. She coached twenty All- OVC selections including OVC Pitchers of the Year Amber May (2011) and Hanna Mennenga (2013). Following her eight seasons at EIU Schuette has posted an record during her tenure at Purdue, including five wins over top 25 opponents. Her student-athletes were honored with nine All-Mideast Region, seven All-Big Ten, two Academic All-America, four Academic All-District and 34 Academic All-Big Ten accolades. Two of her players went on to play in the National Pro Fastpitch League. Purdue finished sixth in the Big Ten Conference in 2014 and twice advanced to the conference tournament quarterfinals. On March 5, 2016, Schuette earned her 300th Division I victory as Purdue defeated the College of Charleston. A former pitcher at Eastern Illinois, she ended her career playing at Indiana State, where she was a two-time Academic All-American and All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as a senior. Schuette graduated cum laude with a bachelor s degree in physical education at Indiana State in 2001 and received a master s degree in kinesiology and societal studies (sports management) from San Jose State in Schuette was the head coach at Quincy University in 2005 and an assistant coach at San Jose State from 2001 to Schuette and her husband Jason have two children PANTHER SUPPORT STAFF
