4 Executive summary O B J E C T I V E S A N D A I M S The objects of the charity are to preserve and protect the good mental and physical health of the public by contributing to the prevention of suicide, in particular but not exclusively, by the advancement of education and training into the causes and effect of suicide and suicide intervention, thereby seeking to reduce the risk and occurrence of suicide. The strategies for achieving those objectives are training, campaigning and consultancy. Grassroots deliver two of the major LivingWorks training packages (ASIST and SafeTALK) alongside a number of mental health related courses the organisation has developed. Grassroots' training is well-regarded, up-to-date and regularly evaluated. Training is delivered using an in-house team and a network of professional associate trainers. Grassroots' experts sit on several local and national committees relevant to its aims, where they contribute to operational and strategic goals and outcomes. Grassroots are also engaged in activities to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention issues, both locally and beyond, including the Stay Alive mobile phone app. S I G N I F I C A N T A C T I V I T I E S Grassroots works locally and nationally with communities, organisations, services and individuals, helping them to become ready, willing and able to effectively support someone at risk of suicide. Our training and consultancy helps to save lives by enabling conversations that count. Through public events and our online community we work to reduce stigma and promote positive mental health and wellbeing. 4
5 achievements STRENGTHENING GOVERNANCE Through trustee recruitment, resulting in the appointment of four new trustees. Development of our Real Talk campaign focussing on reaching and connecting with a community of Changemakers and developing a suite of community- led, face-to-face, and digital products and resources. REAL TALK Continued delivery of a three-year contract with Public Health BHCC at Brighton & Hove City Council to train the local population in suicide alertness, suicide intervention, understanding and working self-injury, and Mental health awareness Reaching 47K downloads for the Stay Alive smartphone app, developed in partnership with Switchplane, and supported by Network Rail, and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. STAY ALIVE APP CAMPAIGNS Delivery of a men s focused suicide prevention campaign in East Sussex, commissioned by Public Health at East Sussex County Council Working in partnership with Coastal West Sussex Mind to deliver a contract with Public Health at West Sussex County Council, training the local population in suicide alertness and intervention. PARTNERSHIPS TRAINING Delivered 53 courses, training 1022 people. 5
6 achievements T R A I N I N G A C H I E V E M E N T S During the reporting period Grassroots trained 1022 people in suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive both on a quantitative and qualitative level. There is clear evidence that the ASIST and SafeTALK training helped people become more ready, willing and able to help someone at risk of suicide. In turn, there is strong evidence that the range of mental health awareness training delivered increased participants knowledge, understanding, and confidence around mental health. 8 Training delivery S U I C I D E I N T E R V E N T I O N & A L E R T N E S S T R A I N I N G When community members and workforces are trained in both safetalk and ASIST it creates a robust community model of suicide prevention. Together they provide a consistent, whole community approach to suicide prevention. This model yields high numbers of people alert to suicide, who can then undertake a suicide alert and refer the person at risk to a person or service that can provide extra support in the context of a suicide intervention. Many organisations locally and further afield are training staff in line with this community model. To further this aim Grassroots has begun development of its Real Talk approach, with the aim of reaching and connecting with a community of ChangeMakers and developing a suite of community-led, face-to-face, and digital products and resources. 8
9 real talk W H A T I S R E A L T A L K? At Grassroots, we know real conversations save real people s lives. We enable those conversations on all levels. Real talk is at the heart of our community approach. We teach you the skills to start a conversation that is transformative. Real Talk is a meaningful conversation. One that s open, direct, honest and courageous. Sometimes we all feel like we have no one to talk to. With Real Talk, we can reach people when they re at their most vulnerable. In fact, talking about suicide is the best way we know to prevent suicide. W H Y D O E S O U R W O R K M A T T E R? 1 IN 5 THINK ABOUT SUICIDE IN THEIR LIFE 1 IN 15 WILL ATTEMPT SUICIDE IN THEIR LIFE I m a Brighton based Roller Derby Skater. Having suffered with depression myself and been affected by suicide, I know it is vital to connect with people before they get so desperate they see suicide as the only option. Roller derby is a sport that attracts all kinds of people with differing backgrounds, situations and mental states. We all support each other and our teammates are like family. - Zoe, ChangeMaker 9 Data from Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2014
