1 OCTOBER NEWSLETTER First United Methodist Church 200 N. Market St. Berwick, PA Church # stumcberwick@gmail.com Website: 1stumcberwick.org Parsonage #
2 Happy Halloween by Reverend Robert Wood Jack, as the story goes, had a problem with drinking too much whiskey. Such a bad problem, that he was world famous. Indeed, such a bad problem that he was famous in both heaven and hell. Although, infamous is probably the better word. Indeed, he was Satan's favorite drunk. Every morning Jack would get himself drunk in order to brace himself for getting drunk. That's how bad his problem was. Then one morning Jack reformed. He was so drunk from the night before, that he forgot to get drunk in the morning. And this was big news. Such big new that when Satan heard of it he decided to visit Jack personally. Satan wanted Jack back on the bottle. So he brought a bottle of whiskey with him to tempt Jack. And this frightened Jack. He knew he was going to the devil, but Satan in person was a bit too much for him. So Jack ran. And Satan chased him. So Jack climbed a tree. And Satan climbed up after him. So Jack jumped down from the tree and carved a cross at the bottom of it. And Satan was stuck in the tree. The devil cannot cross the sign of the cross. Satan asked Jack to scrape the cross off of the tree. But Jack wouldn't do it until Satan promised never to tempt him again. So Satan promised, and Jack scraped off the cross. Then Satan jumped down and went home to hell. And Jack was so proud of himself that he decided to have a drink of whiskey. And that drink killed him. At the gates of heaven, Jack found all of the angels laughing about the trick Jack pulled on Satan. They slapped him on the back and congratulated him. But they would not let him into heaven. At the gates of hell, Jack met a very angry Satan. And Satan would not let Jack into hell either. So Jack s soul is condemned to walk the earth for eternity. And he does. But before leaving hell, Jack stole a coal from hell s fire. This coal never goes out. And Jack uses it to light his way at night. And to carry the coal, Jack made a lantern out of a pumpkin. So every year, on All Hallows Eve, Jack walks from house to house, looking through the windows for a place to live. So keep your doors locked. And if you see a shining pumpkin, hide. PS: The story about Jack is just that, a story. To me, October means Halloween. And I find it delightful. Its name comes from All Hallows Eve: the night before All Saints Day. But the origin of Halloween is hidden in history. No one has a true answer regarding its original meaning. So Halloween is only good or as evil as you wish to make it. Therefore, my advice is to enjoy it - but watch out for Jack.
