2 Purpose: This module will assess the student s knowledge of a pumpkin s growth, shape, and ways that a pumpkin can be measured. Students will demonstrate an understanding of sequencing by creating a book that describes the steps in carving a jack-o -lantern. Show-Me Standards Addressed: Knowledge: Sc3, M2, CA1, CA2, C4 Performance: 1.8, 3.5, 4.5 Grade Level Range: 1-2 Jack-o -lantern Module Subject Areas: Math, Science, Communication Arts Materials and Resources Needed: Module packet (containing the Student Prompt, the Response Sheets, and the Scoring Guides) and paper, construction paper, markers, glue, scissors, pencils, and a pencil. Time Needed for Module: four-five 40 minute periods Instructions for Administration: The teacher s job will be to go over the instructions with the students. Pre-assessment Instructions: Students need the prerequisite knowledge of the process used to carve a jack-o -lantern and the steps of plant growth. Students should know how to describe a process and how to use transition words to establish sequence. Prior to doing the module, the teacher should read aloud to the students the book called, Pumpkin, Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington. Third Edition: Performance-Based Assessments for Classroom Use: Missouri Assessment Program,

5 Jack-o -lantern Performance Event Student Prompt October is here. Our country will be celebrating a special holiday this month, Halloween. This holiday has many traditions associated with it that originated in other countries and were brought here by immigrants. One of the traditions that we enjoy today in the United States is the carving of jack-o -lanterns. We have been ing our German pen pals and sharing our favorite holidays and traditions. In our , we mentioned our Halloween tradition of carving a jack-o -lantern. We need to explain what a jack-o - lantern is and how our pen pals can carve and create a jack-o -lantern. To help our foreign friends understand an American tradition, each of us will create a book that explains how to carve a jack-o -lantern and contains pictures to show the process. Remember that carving a jack-o - lantern is a step-by-step process similar to cooking a favorite food. Using sequencing words like first, then, next, and last will help make the process easier to understand and should be used in your text. We can also make our book clearer by labeling the parts of a pumpkin in the book s pictures. Remember that our book will be used to explain how to create a jack-o - lantern to our pen pals, so you should use your very best spelling and handwriting. Your telling sentences should be written using periods and capital letters. You may use as many steps as you need to help explain how to carve a pumpkin into a jack-o -lantern. Work carefully because your book may be chosen to help our class carve a jack-o -lantern. Happy writing! Third Edition: Performance-Based Assessments for Classroom Use: Missouri Assessment Program,
