The first quake took place on May the 20 th. This quake had a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter Scale. Nine days later, May the 29 th, another earthquake struck the same region. It had a Page 10 of 14
11 magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of this earthquake was in Medolla. These 2 strong earthquakes resulted in the destruction of churches and factories in the region. Buildings weakened by the first quake were badly damaged during the second one. Around 45,000 people were homeless and around 400 people were injured.
