REPORT ON THE ROSS ALLUVIAL GOLD PROJECT PERMITS: : :41977 WESTLAND NEW ZEALAND Author: Hamish Campbell November

Target Geology Alluvial gold mineralisation in the Old Man Group: In March 1865 gold was found at Ross by Jones and Donnelly. Shallow, high-grade alluvium in the beds of Jones and Donnelly Creeks was followed down from the discovery sites and it was found to rapidly deepen northwards under the present town site. Using experience obtained from the Victorian goldfields, the early miners sank numerous shafts into the south end of what became Jones Flat. In the process these miners discovered that the gold did not concentrate on a distinct basal horizon, but formed a series of bottoms. Coarse gravel horizons containing high alluvial values stacked on one another. Overall these various gold bearing horizons were labelled the Old Man Group. These are deeply weathered orange-brown silty Pliocene gravels, sands and silts which outcrop widely around the edges of the Ross basin. These mark the first sub aerial sedimentation at the end of the Mio-Pliocene marine regression and the onset of glacial activity in the mid Pliocene. The Old Man Group has been subdivided into three units: 1) Donnelly Conglomerate The Donnelly conglomerate is a m thick sequence of orange-red, deeply weathered - sandy - silty - well rounded conglomerate with lesser sands and minor carbonaceous material composed of Greenland Group greywacke and hornfels, quartz, Torlesse greywacke, Alpine schist and granite clasts. Irregular beds of orange silty sand occur widely within the gravels. The best exposures occur in the upper part of Jones Creek, where the the conglomerate is seen to rest conformably on mid Tertiary sandstone. A thin lignite band usually marks the basal contact. The thick gravel beds dip vertically to very steeply northwards in Jones Creek. Elsewhere these conglomerates are difficult to differentiate from later conglomerate of the Old Man Group, particularly as they seem to become increasingly coarse bedded to massive upwards, making orientation measurements very difficult. 2) Jones Formation The Jones Formation lies in conformable contact with the Donelly Conglomerate. The type section, in Jones Creek, comprises a 54m thick interval of pale bluegrey to yellow, finely laminated, weakly indurated varvose glacial silt with occasional clasts, and a central 6 20m thick horizon of very coarse, angular fresh or hornfelsed Greenland Group, Torlesse graywacke, Alpine schist and Fraser Complex boulders and blocks up to 2m in diameter in a grey-blue silt matrix. This unit marks the onset of glaciation in the region and represents a fore-ice lacustrine environment. Episodic moraine advances into the lake, and continuous supplies of large drop-stones during quiet periods are evidenced by the coarse material. Contorted varves provide evidence of syn-sedimentary slumping or possible ice loading. The clasts appear unoxidised in contrast to the underlying conglomerates. The glacial silts would have effectively sealed up the 3
large clasts from the water table and atmospheric influence, thus preserving them from weathering. 3) Humphrey s Conglomerate The uppermost Old Man Group member: the Humphrey s Conglomerate, outcrops in the southern wall of the Birchfield mine pit (Figure 2), and widely across the hills south of the pit. It is assumed to underlie all or most of the younger gravels filling the Ross Basin. At approximately 100m thick it is the thickest and most widely outcropping of three Old Man Group formations. The Humphrey s conglomerate lies conformably on the Jones Formation and forms steeply north dipping beds predominantly composed of fine, well rounded, deeply weathered orange-brown Torlesse greywacke, granite and biotite schist gravels, pebbles and minor carbonaceous clay. This unit is fluvial in origin with little glacial affinity. This conglomerate is considered the most prospective for gold. Further evidence of the Humphrey s Conglomerate being prospective for gold is demonstrated by the Birchfield mine pit. As stated previously, this unit outcrops in the southern wall of the pit; though the pit is now full of water. However, as the ground rises to the south of the pit, there is ample evidence of old alluvial slucing that was predominately targeted at the deeply weathered Humphrey s conglomerate. An excellent geological map compiled by A. Jury (P.M HANCOCK & ASSOC 1981) gives a cross section A B (Figure 2) outlining the relevant target geology (Figure 1). Pit & Drilling target area In the cross section A B several gravel horizons (R6-7-8) are inferred approximately south-south-east of the Birchfield mine pit. These horizons being Old Man gravel units have ore potential. Figure 2 4
Target Areas Figure 3: Target Geology Figure 4: Section A-B - Inferred gravel horizons 5
These same gold bearing gravel horizons(leads) were demonstrated in the Birchfield mine pit. Figure 5: Gold bearing gravel horizons or leads in the Birchfield mine pit PAST GOLD PRODUCTION Historical accounts claim that 300,000 oz gold was taken from the Birchfield pit. Early miners (Approximately ) mined 5 long tons of gold = 168,000 oz. Modern mining (Approximately ) 130,000 ounces taken from the Birchfield mine pit (Figure 2). N.B: These accounts are anecdotal and cannot be accurately verified. 6

EXPLORATION CARRIED OUT BY SUPERIOR MINING: MARCH JULY ) Pit Excavation Program In order to prove that ore potential or auriferous gravel (sufficient for mining) exists south of the mine pit, a 20 ton excavator was hired to explore for virgin Old Man Group gravel below the early miners (1900 s) tailings (Figure 7). Figure 7 A track was cleared approx ESE & WNW across the bulk of the early miners tailings so that prospecting test pits (five in all) could be excavated. The positions of the pits are marked (Figure 8). 8

This pit was dug through loose tailings, and then it broke into tightlycompacted, virgin Humphrey s Conglomerate. Gold (approx 0.4 g/t per cubic metre) was found in this pit. 10
Figure 11: Test pit 4. This pit was identical to Pit (3). Several flakes of gold were found in material that was panned. Figure 12: Test pit 5. This pit was dug through loose tailings washed fines from tailings and then broke into tightly-compacted, virgin Humphrey s Conglomerate. Flakes of gold were found in a pan sample. 11
Drilling programme During May 2009, 6 drill holes were completed. A diagram (Figure 13) displaying the drill hole sites is below. Figure 13: Drill hole locations 12
Figure 14: Drilling Hole RC01 Figure 15: Drilling Hole RC03 13
Drilling method The method of drilling was reverse circulation. The samples were collected in 0.5 metre increments in plastic bags. The samples were delivered in rock chip form, where the gravel material was crushed by the down-hole hammer. Figure 16: Drill sample bags Figure 17: Drill sample 14
Geology of drill sample material RC01: From 0 78 metres the hole passed through layers of well rounded, deeplyweathered, orange-brown Mount Greenland and Torlesse greywackes, granite and biotite schist gravels (Humphrey s conglomerate). Quartz was also present, and this may have been from stringers within the Mount Greenland greywacke. The granite and biotite schist pebbles or cobbles can be deemed as being exotics there origin being from further inland. This material is fluvial in origin and has little glacial affinity. From metres the hole penetrated what the locals call Pa-pah Bottom or Blue Bottom. This unit is bluey-black-grey to brown well-bedded marine siltstone with some layers of sandstone. Throughout the West Coast gold explorers have adjudged this unit to be True Bottom whereby gold has never been found in or below it; thus the hole was stopped at 85 metres. RC02: After passing through 1 metre of loose surface Humphrey s Conglomerate the hole went into Pa-pah or Blue Bottom, and the hole was stopped at 10 metres. No drill samples were submitted for analysis. RC03: From 0 95 metres the hole passed through layers of well rounded, deeplyweathered, orange-brown Mount Greenland and Torlesse greywackes, granite and biotite schist gravels (Humphrey s conglomerate). From metres the hole went into large quartz and greywacke boulders. RC04: From 0 28 metres the hole passed through clean Greenland Group greywacke and hornfels, quartz, Torlesse greywacke, Alpine schist and granite cobbles and boulders (Donnelly Conglomerate). The fresh nature of this material indicates that the hole had penetrated a terrace of Donnelly s Creek which could have had much larger riverine dimensions previously. Due to the loose, bouldery nature of the ground the hole was stopped at 28 metres, otherwise casing would have been required to drill any further. RC05: This hole passed through approximately 2 metres of previous miners tailings then went immediately into Pa-pah or Blue Bottom ; therefore no drill samples were submitted for analysis. RC06: This hole immediately penetrated Pa-pah or Blue Bottom. This hole was persevered with to 46 metres because of the possibility that the bottom was an erratic overhang or lip lying above prospective gravel. Because the bottom continued to this depth the hole was stopped and no samples were submitted for analysis. 15
Drilling Summary Part of the drilling (Holes RC02: RC05: RC06) has revealed an apparent wall of Pa-pah or Blue Bottom running almost east-west and adjacent to the Birchfield mine pit. The strike-width-dip of this unit is hard to determine on surface (Figure 5). That is why samples from Holes RC02: RC05: RC06 were not submitted for analysis. There appears to be, however, a large area (Holes RC01: RC03) of Humphrey s Conglomerate (Figure 5) and further drilling is required south of Holes RC01 & 3 to test it. Sample Concentration and Analysis In order to assess the total quantity of alluvial gold in each drill sample, each sample was concentrated by a Wilfley table and sluice box. The concentrate of each sample was submitted to the SGS laboratory at Rapahohe, and then it was sent on to the SGS laboratory at Waihi for assaying. Results Significant high grade gold intercepts were reported from a number of shallow reverse circulation (RC) drill holes. The most impressive of these included: RC 03 graded 5.45 g/t over 1 metre from 21.0 metres RC 01 graded 1.37 g/t over 3 metres from 1.0 metre Table 1: Ross Property Significant Reverse Circulation (RC) Drill Hole Results Drill Hole Hole Depth From (m) (m) RC (incl. 1.0 RC incl To (m) Interv al (m) Au (g/t ) ) Comments Drill hole recovery m ranging from % Drill hole recovery m ranging from 25-95% Conclusion The drilling (Holes RC01 & RC03) has demonstrated that rich, layered auriferous horizons or leads exist south of the Birchfield Mine pit, and that the prospective potential of the Ross area does not exist solely under the current town site. 16
Further drilling recommendations The drilling (Holes RC01 & RC03) has demonstrated that rich, layered auriferous horizons or leads exist south of the Birchfield Mine pit, and that the prospective potential of the Ross area does not exist solely under the current town site. It is recommended that 3 further holes RCO7 RC09 (300 metres in total) be drilled along the southern boundary of the R & M Mining permit (Figure 9). This will not only test for further tonnage on the option ground, it will go a long way in testing the Superior ground which is adjacent and to the south. The possibility that further large tonnages of gold bearing gravel most likely exist south of Holes RC01 & RC03 is demonstrated in the aerial photograph below. The star signifies the exact location of a shaft that was sunk 410 feet (the deepest shaft sunk in the Ross locality) into gravel. This clearly indicates that minerals potential lies further south. 17
