CONFERENCE VENUE One of the masterpieces of Neoclassical architecture in the Americas, the Palace of Mining was built between 1797 and 1813 by the renowned architect Manuel Tolsá, to house the Royal School of Mines and the Royal Court of Mining. Currently it is part of the heritage of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The Closing Ceremony will be held at the Geological Museum, built by Architect Carlos Herrera, under the guide and collaboration of geologist José G. Aguilera, to house the Geological Institute. This building was the seat of the Xth International Geological Congress and functioned as a research institute until 1956, when it became the Museum of the Institute of Geology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. 3

REGISTRATION FORM: MID-MEETING FIELD TRIP November 14 th Mid- Meeting field trip to Tepoztlan, devoted to cross one of the most impressive Quaternary volcanic fields of the Transmexican Volcanic belt in central Mexico. This field is constituted by 250 monogenetic cinder cones, the youngest born in the last 2, 000 years, when there were already human settlements in the region. The field trip includes a visit to the scenic Miocene volcanic succession near Tepoztlan, which is a beautiful village with traditional architecture. 4
POST-MEETING FIELD TRIP GUIDE November 17th 21th 1st day (November 17 th ) The first day is devoted to visiting the Tlayúa quarry, state of Puebla, which is a paleontological site with an extraordinary Cretaceous and Cenozoic fossil record of more than 20 taxonomic groups, including remarkably well-preserved fishes, lizards, turtles and invertebrates. Along the road to Tlayúa a series of morphological features can be observed such as the Popocatepetl, Iztaccihuatl and Malinche stratovolcanoes. When visiting the Tlayúa quarry and its Mixteco Museum, in the distance we will be able to observe the pre-hispanic fortress known as Tepexi el Viejo. We will spend the night in Tehuacan. 5
2nd day (November 18 th ) The objective of the second day is a visit to the Mixteca Alta Geopark. This Geopark has some of the most important traces of Mesoamerican culture and is characterized by a variety of conspicuous erosional features strongly related to traditional farming practices carried out for more than 3500 years. These features represent a valuable geo-heritage to show the relationship between geology and society and promote the knowledge of Earth sciences among the general and specialized public. These erosional features include gullies, badlands, erosive amphitheaters derived from fluvial and mass-wasting processes, alluvial deposits, palaeosols and water and sediment traps used for farming purposes (locally known as camellones or lamabordos). The area to visit is part of the recently designated UNESCO Mixteca Alta Global Geopark. We will spend the following two nights in Oaxaca City. 6
3rd day (November 19 th ) On the third day we will visit geologic localities of Cenozoic volcanism and the Proterozoic outcrops of high grade metamorphic rocks around Oaxaca City. Green and pink Miocene Ignimbrites cropping out in the area are not only important elements of the geologic history of Oaxaca, but they are also the source material for colorful stone facades characteristics of the most emblematic buildings of Oaxaca City 4th day (November 20 th ) On the fourth day the participants will visit two of the most prominent pre-hispanic archeological sites of southern Mexico, Monte Alban and Mitla, which belong to the Zapoteca cultural heritage. Settlement of Monte Alban initiated during the pre- Classic Period (500 BCE), whereas Mitla was inhabited since at least the Classic Period ( CE). 7
5th day (November 21 th ) The fifth day morning is free, so you can spend it visiting the city of Oaxaca or shopping local handicrafts and souvenirs. We will set off to Mexico City around noon.
