1 The fifth International Symposium of the International Geoscience Programme Project 589 Development of the Asian Tethyan Realm: Genesis, Process and Outcomes Yangon, Myanmar, 25 October 2 November, 2016 Second Circular and Call for Abstracts Invitation & Aim The evolution of the Tethyan realm has long been investigated yet remains far from being fully understood. The IGCP 589 project is thus aimed to explore more constraints on the interpretation of the development of the Asian Tethyan Realm and to unite experienced and young professionals who have been working in related subjects. To illuminate the history of the Tethys, scientific approaches and techniques of different disciplines are to be employed, such as tectonics, paleogeography, paleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural geology, petrology, geochemistry, paleomagnetism, and geophysics. Continued investigation is the only way to reach more appropriate explanations and to gradually approach the truth.

2 The Fifth International Symposium of IGCP-589 is going to be held in Yangon, Myanmar, from 25 October to 2 November, It provides a forum where colleagues from different countries can present their work and discuss their ideas covering various aspects of the development of the Asian Tethyan Realm. The Pre- and post-symposium excursions - geological transverses of the Neo-Tethys suture zone and the Sibumasu block will provide a chance for participants to examine the geology and tectonics closely related to the development of Tethys in these regions. The Symposium is under the sponsorship of Myanmar Earthquake Committee for the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) in collaboration with the Department of Geology, Yangon University, Ministry of Education. Tel: Mobile: Fax: Date & Venue Technical sessions, both poster and oral presentations, will be held at the Function Hall, MES Building, Hlaing University Campus, Yangon, Myanmar 24 October 2016: Arrival of participants. 25 to 26 October 2016: Pre-symposium field excursion to the Rakhine Western Ranges 27 to 28 October 2016: Scientific sessions of the symposium and business meeting. 29 October to 2 November, 2016: Post-symposium field excursion to the Shan State. On 2 November, participants who will fly back to home country from Yangon International Airport, will go back to Yangon. For those who will fly back to home country from Mandalay International Airport, stay in Mandalay. 3 November 2016: Departure of participants from Myanmar. Excursions The two-day pre-symposium field excursion will take place in Rakhine State in the western part of Myanmar where the participants can observe an arc-shaped sedimentary belt mainly formed by Cenozoic rocks and classically considered as an active accretionary wedge related to the eastward subduction of the Bengal basin oceanic crust. In addition the participants will have time to enjoy along the Ngapali Beach.

4 The five-day post-symposium field excursion will take place in Southern Shan State in the eastern part of Myanmar where the participants can observe the Paleozoic rocks unconformably covered by Mesozoic (Triassic to Jurassic ) dominantly continental sequences. In addition the participants will have a visit to the Inlay Lake where the world classic famous leg-rowers can be found.

5 Fees Symposium only (27-28 October 2016): USD 200 (Regular, covering admission to the scientific session, abstract volume, refreshments, and symposium dinner). Pre-symposium field excursion (25-26 October 2016): USD 350 (covering transportation by car, food, accommodation (shared twin room), and excursion guidebook). Post-symposium field excursion (29 October-2 November 2016): USD 550 (covering transportation by car, food, accommodation (shared twin room), and excursion guidebook). Travel Arrangements Arrival: Participants, who are going to participate in the pre-symposium excursion, are encouraged to be in Yangon by 24 October For those who will join the symposium only, please arrive Yangon by 26 October. Departure: The post symposium field excursion is expected to end on 2 November Please make travel arrangements to leave on 3 November, Abstract Submission Participants who wish to give oral/poster presentation must send abstracts to igcp @gmail.com. Figures should be sent as separated files. The Deadline for abstract submission is August 31, Visa Participants who need to apply for entry visa to Myanmar must contact the organizing committee at igcp @gmail.com for an official invitation letter, after you have registered and submitted the abstract for the symposium. Support Program Based on annual funding from UNESCO/IUGS for IGCP 589, the project will extend the support (mainly registration fee and accommodation during the symposium) to a small number of participants from developing countries, who meet the following demands: 1) submit abstract before the deadline and 2) participate in the symposium. Please be aware of that this support

6 normally does not cover international airfare and excursion fee. Please contact Dr. JIN Xiaochi for the application of the support.
